What factors alter alignment in your game?

Things like murder is a given, but what else?
What about picking pockets?
attacking without provocation?
doing good acts?

What actions alter your PCs actions in your game?

Law versus Chaos: Actions that place the group over the individual or others over self. For example, if a cleric is constantly using his spells to buff the party or other party members, that would move him more into the realm of Law. If he only used his spells to benefit himself, I would move him more towards Chaos. A balance between the two would be Neutral.

As for Good versus Evil, I happen to like the in-depth discussion on it in the Book of Exalted Deeds. Things like helping others, charity, mercy, and forgiveness, particularly at a character's personal expense, would move them more towards Good. Things like slaying non-combatant members of evil monster tribes, torturing a captive to gain information in order to prevent an attack on an innocent village, etc., would be Evil.

So, from your initial post:
Picking pockets: Chaotic act.
Attacking without provocation: Evil act.

Example of a Good act: Healing a beggar. :)
Lawful act: Turning said beggar in to the Watch for breaking law against panhandling. :D

lmao :D :p :lol:

If it was only so easy in real life :)

What sort of things change the alignment in your game though. I'm making a chart, and I am interested in the things that other DMs use to track alignment.

In my game, simple mortal-on-mortal violence won't make you detect as Evil. This includes mundane mass murder.

Forging a pact with a dark power from the netherworld(s) or casting a lot of [Evil] spells will make you detect as Evil.

Being born on one of the lower planes (or anywhere else with "bad air") will make you detect as Evil.

Being Undead will make you detect as Evil.

Cheers, -- N

PS: There's a list of things Paladins can't do, but that's because their watchful god forbids them to do those things, not because those things are all always evil.

used this as a marker for a group of CG once

On being Chaotic Good….

Charge in regardless, but stand-up to consequence (i.e. save elf women set upon by 1/2 orcs without knowing or asking why).

Give a suffering beggar cash first time you see him, and a satirical semi-harsh chat the next time.

Keep 2 out of 4 magic items knowing another party members luck will be in next time;
Keep 2 out of 4 magic items when it happens again, thinking you are very lucky, and knowing another party members luck will be in next time;
Distribute the items evenly when it happens again because this much good fortune can only lead to woe and you already buffed to high heaven from the last 4 items and the party are struggling to keep up to protect you…

Ambushing the Evil barons tax wagon and giving all back to the poor.
Except for the fact that stack of uncut gems will only cause arguments amongst the peasantry who will only get shafted when they try to sell them.......and they can use the metal from the guards gear to make plough-shares so you may as well keep those crystal figurines as well…
