What foam scenery should I make?

Shaping? Why would you want to shape it on a trash can? Do you mean cut it?

If you're shaving off small pieces of foam, it's better to let that fall in a trash can instead of your table or floor. Otherwise you'll be finding tiny pieces of foam for months...

Why seal? Do you have to cover the whole thing?

Most spray paint will dissolve styrofoam. Coating it with glue prevents that. Tho you can get some interesting ruins my spraying your foam buildings... ;)

Ah. I thought shaping = molding.

You need to cover the whole thing in glue? That's a lot of squeezing.

If you're using something small (like a chest), I would think that spraypaint is a bit much. Can't you use brush paint?

Water based spray paint (H2O) does not melt the foam. When I use spray paint, I use that.

However, virtually all of my terrain is hand painted, which doesn't take a ton of time if you remember to paint it all before you glue it together. I paint the floors and walls before gluing together. I "carve" pavement and brick lines with pencils.

I'd strongly suggest not making the walls to scale. You and your players will not be able to see over them to see your minis.

Or get it in the gallon bottle, pour it into a cup, and paint it on with an old brush.

Totally works, and generally looks a lot better too.

Also true. I have seen spray paint that claims to be foam safe dissolve foam, so I usually test on a scrap if it's a brand I haven't tried before.

I really like this idea. Thanks!

I am very sad.

Apparently it's not possible to get extruded polystyrene anywhere in or around san francisco. :(

I found that out around Halloween... The lack of home made decorations this year was... disturbing. :(

Do you have a Lowes or Home Depot? They might be able to order you a sheet or two for delivery. Go to the homebuilders area. It comes in big sheets. They will cut it there for you if you don't have a truck or a van, though the sale will be final. (Big deal! One piece lasts a long time if you're doing small to moderate terrain.)
