What games from the early 80's are still being published?

En Garde! (distinguished by the exclamation point from the more recent board game) was, last I checked, in print from a UK publisher. The game was first published in the 1970s.
I can't believe I forgot to mention En Garde!

Another early Eighties Early Modern game is Maelstrom, which is back in print from Arion Games. It's been available only on .pdf, but the publisher announced that it would also be available via print on-demand. Arion Games also released an all-new companion volume and some adventures as well.

When did Car Wars become a RPG? It was just a board game at first. Also the original rules are no longer published. The current version is a GRUPS supplement.

Merric, your break down is great. Later I am going to have update my first post using it.

The old Car Wars compendium, ie the original rules, is available as a pdf.

Car Wars Compendium

I think a lot of the cars and maps and such on card stock are in pdf now as well.

Edit to add: That I think the compendium contains, imho, a very stripped down and simplistic rpg.

Was there a stipulation it had to be in print by the original publisher?
Absolutely not. But there was the stipulation that the game was still basically the same. The D6 Star Wars and the d20 Star Wars are not in any way related except for the fluff. And the fluff is independent of RPGs.
Okay, sure. And then we can bump Champions off the list, because that RPG is now called Hero System and Champions is a genre book.
Not exactly, the Hero System Rules grew out of Champions and other Hero Games products. As early as the releases of Espionage and Justice Inc they were referring to the Hero System as the RPG and Champions as a superhero skinning of it.

D6, though, is iffy on the 'in print' status because the new WEG has just gone under. If PDFs count, though, I suppose those and the forthcoming (or is it out yet?) OGL version of D6 would qualify.
I don't think the PDF is going to be released as WEG is dead. But the OGL version of D6 did make it to the web and it is hosted apart from WEG much like the 3e OGL stuff is now hosted on the web separately from WotC.

AFAIK, that's a new company that bought ICE's IP and is doing business under the old name. The same applies to Hero Games, and would apply to TSR from 1997-1999.
DOJ Games bought the IP of the old Hero Games. But Champions and HSR have never really been out of print. The BBB (4th ed Champions) was available even during the Fuzion fiasco.
