What happened to "Race Matters"?

I'm glad they didn't make race more important; I don't want some racial paths shoehorning class choices. I'd rather have more variety, allowing more options for things like dwarven wizards, tiefling fighters, and halfling clerics.

Why is it assumed racial choices==class focus? Seriously, I'd love to see something which married "dwarven stolidity" with "arcane mastery". There's a lot of options...

Lore Of The Ancients: Dwarf wizards begin play with one extra ritual.

Hammercast: A dwarf may embed an attack spell in his hammer; when he makes a succesful attack on a target, he may discharge the spell.

Ironshod staff: A dwarf using the staff as an implement does 1d10 damage instead of 1d8.

I would have rathered they have extra options, personally. Even as variants? That way it would save me the time to have to create these for each race (which is why I would buy a system as opposed to just house ruling and creating everything). I was also disappointed with this omission, but maybe it will be in a future book, along with the bard, barbarian, druid...etc...

I don't think it would affect variety or balance either, as long as the racial PP was balanced against the other paths, so if you wanted to play a dwarven fighter there'd a unique option for you, demonstrating your races preclivity towards that area, but one that wouldn't make it any better than say a halfling fighter going the Iron Vanguard route...

Why? Because Tolkien said so ;) ... just kidding, but it's assumed (at least in certain worlds) that certain races are better at certain things.

....But I like your thoughts here... great ideas.

Well, over at the Wizards boards I started to create a Racial Prodigy "class" that does for races at the Heroic tier what Paths and Destinies do at the Paragon and Epic tiers. Basically, you get 3 powers based on your class and role (so there are Dragonborn Defender, Dragonborn Controller, Dragonborn Leader, and Dragonborn Striker suites), a racial ability improves, you gain a new ability, and other stuff. I put it on hold for lack of interest, but if you want to see that I can move it over here and start it up again.

I would love that....

It is really true that racial abilities don't matter much at high levels? It seems like a lot of them would.

Most will still be useful at high levels, but unfortunately it seems a far cry from what was original suggested as a design goal. I think that is a shame, as I was looking forward to that.

Cheers
