Just did the math -

So the nay-sayers are not willing to wait an extra 10 seconds for the main page to load?

I figured 10-12 pictures (resized) that are 3-4Kb in size (30Kb - 48Kb max) for the first load - as the images are cached.

Now somebody help me out - what is download time for 30Kb to 48Kb on a 28Kbps dial up and on a 56Kbps dial up?

Keep rolling in the feedback!

It's not the modems, it's the server. Thousands of people downloading those pics all at the same time, all day, every day. The main page was slimmed down drastically to reduce server load. When we upgrade the server, I might consider putting some fancy stuff back, but not until then.

If you want to look at the WotC cover art, just visit their website. It's not like WotC will not remind you of what their next products are going to be. I don't think cover pics of WotC products are all that essential to a good front page for ENWorld.

There are dozens of sites that are constantly serving as free advertisements for WotC, while ENP has a much smaller outlet before they even show up on people's radar. The front page is better suited to pushing more obscure products like those by ENP. Not to mention that it supports the community here.

I'd like to see a sidebar that shows, "what's new" on RPGnow, or RPGshop instead. That would be much more relevant to me, and would help business a great deal for the PDF publishers IMO. But, instead I try to visit RPGshop's, "newest 100 items" page about once a week, or before I visit my local gamestore.
