Nothing, it becomes very sad, Might try to raise the master, or might just leave and disapear in the nature, quickly dying of boredom interacting with other animal of it's kind. It might also try to find a new master, whatever you feel like, become a familiar for another character in the group so on.

I think what he means is wether or not it retains the powers that it gets from being a familiar, or reverts to being a normal animal. I don't know the answer, but I'm pretty sure that is the question...

I know that, if you read my previous post you get my answer, at least my way of handling the situation. I never saw any rule on the subject.

IIRC, this was addressed in Tome and Blood.

That notwithstanding, IMC familiars instantly explode into a harmless poof of fur/feathers/whatever when the master dies. Much more entertaining.

I have a similar question though. What happens to a Paladin's mount when he/she goes unconscious? Is it automatically dismissed? Does it dismiss itself and return to the celestial plane if it so chooses? Does it fight to the death protecting its unconscious master? That came up in one of our games, but I forget how we ended up ruling it.

IMHO it should loose its additional powers, because these were a class feature of the now deceased spellcaster. If that spellcaster gets raised, the powers are back.
Could be a house rule, though :\

Funny. IMC the Sor/Wiz explodes when her familiar dies.

I've always thought it would be cool to play a familiar who inhereted the powers of his deceased master. He would keep the familiar bonuses, and also have a spellcasting class.
