What happens to a paladin's mount ?

What happens to a paladin's mount if the paladin falls unconscious , and second if the paladin dies , does the mount take everything it was carrying to his native plain ?
It might be a silly question but it bothers me.

Since there are no specific guidelines dealing with these circumstances, the default rules still apply. So the mount stays until its duration wears off (2 hours per paladin level), at the end of which it returns to its celestial home with everything it is carrying.

This creates a few interesting situations:

- If the paladin falls unconscious, the mount (being intelligent enough), might pick up the character and carry him to safety. If it knows that there is a temple of the paladin's god nearby, it will head in that direction.

- A paladin might commission an item that allows his mount to use a Cure Wounds spell on him. He can then explain to the mount what it must do if the paladin falls in battle.

- If a paladin dies and the mount picks him up, the paladin's corpse is now an object. As such, it also returns to the celestial realms with the mount when the duration expires. In fact, I bet there's a decent-sized paladin graveyard in the Seven Heavens, established by archons to receive the corpses of fallen paladins brought in by their special mounts.

I don't have anything to add, but I love that idea.

So, for example if the mount dies everything it was carrying drops on the floor , but if the paladin dies the mount gets some pretty good items , so if i am playing an evil cleric and i have defeated paladin of Pelor and the DM says that everything was on the mount...so is it correct for the stuff to disappear , or the mount still stays and fight to the end ? Is it that loyal that it will fight to the death ? I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you.

I'd say it depends on the personality of the paladin's mount. Some mounts may fight to the death due to loyalty. Some mounts may try to flee, especially if they can carry the paladin's corpse away, so as to try and get help and possibly get the paladin raised (if that's an option).

One thing that I would say the mount cannot do is return to its plane of its own volition until the duration of the calling ends.

But a pragmatic paladin might comission an item that, when activated, casts a Dispel Magic on the wielder. The mount could use that item to Dispel the effect that brought it to the Material Plane (which is the equivalent of a 3rd level spell).
