What if every class worked the same way?

It's not all straight d20 standard, but ManaDrive has an EXCELLENT classless system. They split things into a wide range of fields to train in. If you are interested, I'm sure the base system could be converted with little difficulty. I'd recommend a look in any case.

You can also do something like this in Four Color To Fantasy (4CTF), the Superheroes book from Natural 20 Press. They have a "Hero" class for which you get "Hero" points . . . with which you can buy superpowers, movement boosts, feats, skill points, ability increases, hit points, bonuses to attack, special abilities like Evasion, and so on.

The only thing Hero points don't allow you to do is boost spellcasting, so you'd have to modify it to handle that.
