What is a good prestige class for a warmage?

Okay, being a semi-beginner, I don't know what all that meant. I'm sorry, I just don't know if your talking in abbreviations, about books, or if you just have bad typing skills:p . Sorry, that was kind of rude.

P.S. Sorry about all the continuous posts.

Touch of both. :)

Per the book Battle Magic, a battle mage must build his own Mortis Harness (that thing with runes that he needs to cast spells with).

Since you can wear armor (if you take the Battle MAge route) you could see if your Game MAster will allow you to build said Mortis Harness into a set of armor. It would probably improve
your chances of not blowing out runes.

But I'm getting ahead of myself... :)

The artillerist is listed (look under the ARRGGHH!! heading)> Let me know what you think.

Forgive the format. I haven't figured out Enworld's editing systems yet. :)

I believe you misunderstood - I was suggesting feats for a warmage to take that would add spells to give more flavor to the otherwise Melba arcanist. I wasn't discussing prestige classes - just another way to develop the class, give it more personality.

No, no... the misunderstanding isn't mine! :)

I mentioned the PrCearlier in the thread, and volunteered to list it if there was an interest. Had to send it in pieces (LOTS of 'edit post' entries) since I type too slow (server shuts me out). Henk-thokk said he was interested, so I listed it. Figured he'd like to know that it was done and where to find it. :)

Thanks for all the tips. I hope one day to be like you.;) I am not really sure how I got 16 hit points. My DM likes to have me roll my stats and then he makes the rest of the character, and I choose my skill ranks and feats and so on. I calculated it all up, 6 for hit dice, 3 for toughness, and 5 for a con of 20. All together that makes 14 not 16. Anyhow, I highly appreciate it.:D My whole character is messed up that way. I sometimes worry about my DM, specially because he's my brother.:)

Uh . . . am I the only one still confused by this? How did you start out with 20 con as a human?

EDIT: On the other hand, if you took Toughness twice, and had +4 hp due to con, not +5, you would have 6+3+3+4 = 16.

And, I mean, it's not like I was just going to run straight at some Ogre Mage like some Barbarian, or Fighter:p . I would never do that, seeing as my spells do more damage than my spear could ever do. By the way, what is Mithral Breastplate, could I find it in the PHB or what? I have 1050 gp, would that be enough to afford it? but again, thanx for all the tips. About maxing tumble to flank, why would I do that if I can just shoot orbs at people? Flanking means I have to get close and I'm not like a fighter or anything (:D) I would just get myself killed if I just tried to walk up to something just to make it easier to hit him.;)

Mithral is a special material and is described in the DMG. You can find it in the SRD at http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/SpecialMaterials.rtf. It's more expensive than the money you have right now tho :)

You can also tumble out of the reach of your opponents. Orbs are ranged attacks so you will provoke an AoO if you cast them while inside the reach of the bad guys.

Check out Complete Arcane again. Warmages do get proficiency in Medium Armors at 8th level, at the same time as the second Armored Mage ability comes in.

Time to switch up to Mithral Full Plate? ;)

No, for 3 reasons:

1- I don't want to reduce my speed.

2- My Dex is so high that I would lose AC.

3- I'm pretty sure a warmage is not proeficient in them. They can cast spells in them but it don't say you gain proficiency with them.

I don't have the book on me right now, but I'm pretty (90%) sure it does say you gain proficiency with them. You gain the proficiencies as you level.

The thing about the warmage class is that, despite some apparent advantages for fighter/mage type builds (higher HD, cast in armor, etc), its spell list is far too limited to make such multi-class builds effective. Warmages lack nearly all of the spells that are bread and butter for a fighter/mage--ray of enfeeblement, shield, wraithstrike (CV), bladeweave (CV), heroism, greater magic weapon, blink, improved blink, contingency, etc.

Fair enough. Consider, though, that if you only dip into Warmage before taking levels in Human Paragon or Dragonslayer you do have access to the amazing Fist of Stone as well as True Strike and Blades of Fire.

Personally, I agree that Bladeweave and Wraithstrike are more useful overall. One day, I will play the Illumian Dragonslayer I've been tinkering with. :D

Yes, you do.

I like the idea of War mage X -- Barbarian 1-2 -- Rage Mage x (usually 1)

An old version of the PRC is at http://www.wizards.com/?x=dnd/iw/20031116a&page=7

There is a lot of very decent class syngerys here -- The war mage and the barbarian can both use medium armor (at 8th warmage level) -- This combo gets you improved HP -- a decent AC (since your defensive spells suck) and the ability to spel rage--

Since you don't have expeditious retreat the Barbarian speed boost will helpmake up for that -- Rage can let get a personal boost if you get stuck in melee

The only really bad things here are that you take a spell casting hit and the arcane failure from Rage Mage reduction is pretty well redundant

Also Practiced Caster a must have feat for you -- It covers all the power loss from Rage Mage and Barbarian --

To keep BAB up you may want several levels of Rage Mage -- say 4 -- At 20th level this gives you 16 caster levels (20 for power) -- a BAB of 12 and 2d12,4d6 and 14d4 -- with a decnt CON this is a reasonable HP alotment and plenty of nasty tricks

Your magic items of choice -- Mithril Full Plate and Mithril Buckler -- enchanted of course for Mondo AC (by m/u standards anyway) and a dex bonus up to 16

If you want a hand weapon A spell storing longsword +1 or glaive is a solid choice -- stick a scorching ray or poison spell on it for extra fun

-- everything else can be blast and self buff stuff stuff -- Personally I like a Staff of Fire for the imagery (and for the reason that as I understand the rules you can use your Edge with the spells from it)
