What is a ring of sustenance worth to you?

one of the benifits of sleeping for 8 hours is that you are able to prepare spells. The ring makes it so that your get the benifits of 8 hours of sleep in 2. so after two hours of sleep. you have basically slept 8 why should you then have to rest for 6 more hours.

elves don't sleep, they trance. An elf with a Ring of sustinence would only have to trance for 4 hours but could then prepare spells they don't have to rest for another 4 to be able to prepare spells. because the ring gave them the benifit of the extra 4 hours of rest that they would normally need to waste.

Don't the rules state somewhere that you can only prepare spells once in a 24 hour period? I don't have my books handy so I can't check, but I thought that was written somewhere... if not it makes a good house rule if you want to advoid the whole "Well, that fight is done, let's rest 8 hours and move on to the next one"

Actually I'm a little bit surprised ... the ring gives you more time for traveling? Studying ok, but traveling more than 8 hours per day won't be easier while wearing such a ring. People would still get exhausted after some time.

About the rules: FAQ or Sage advice IIRC... a ring does not help you to regain spells faster.

Nah, that's not it. What I'm talking about is something like a journal entry, where an adventurer is complaining about how he's killed dragons, saved towns, and been in many a tavern, but he's never taken a pee break. Ever. After however many pitchers of beer...

Do you really want to have players role-playing a pee break?

Ok, lets say you you are a resident of a fantasy world, not just a player with a blank character sheet awaiting. Just how much is adding 6 hours to each day of your life worth to you? Never having to worry about starving or dying of thirst? Not having to worry about going blind from tainted water or being poisoned at dinner by assasins or incompetent cooks? How about dropping you chance of being murdered in your sleep by 75%?
Never mind being a resident of a fantasy world - in real life, such an item would be extremely valuable. I know I would take out a (couple of!) monstrous mortgages to get a hold of an item like that. 2500 gp in D&D economics? Pshaw!

In a fantasy world, this item would be priceless. 2500 gp is a complete steal for this item, IMO.

I direct you to the 3.5 PHB, page 178, "If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, she still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells.

Or in 3.0e terms, PHB, page 154 where the identical text occurs.

I'm currently playing in a play by post campaign where we were just attacked underground by a treant who had one to many bizzare templates thrown on him. (Let's just say he was an underground, blood-sucking, part crystal treant.) After finally killing him, the barbarian who had a lot of blood drained from him, started yelling at the dead tree, "So you want my body fluids ... take this," and then relieved himself on the dead tree.

All kidding aside, I tend to run Lankhmar campaigns and I find this a serious problem. Not pee breaks in particular, but the tendency to want to do things 24/7, trying to go from one thing right to the thing. Other campaigns sometimes have a little traveling music, where you have to travel, set up camp, etc. between destinations, but in a big city it's all there and they want to do it all!

But you do sleep, for 2 hours. gaining the benifit of 8 hours of sleep. one of the benifits of 8 hours of sleep is 8 hours of restful calm. (perhaps it doesn't apply to elves, I don't play one so I haven't really thought about the rules for elves)

exactly, you do not regain spells faster but you have more time because you don't have to sit around (or sleep) for 8 hours but only 2. My PC still only gets spells once per day. he just goes to bed at 4 am rather than 10 pm. even before he got the ring my DM didn't let me hjave an encounter and then go to sleep for 8 hours so that I would refresh my spells for that evening.

What a mixed blessing... I suspect I'd go crazy from bordom, because I have the bad habit of 'seeing to my bodies requirements' when I'm bored. I eat when I'm bored, I sleep when I'm bored. I don't use he bathroom when I'm bored, but some of those parts are useful for other recreational pursuits. If I didn't have to do all that, and had 6 hours more time with which to not do all that, I don't know WHAT I'd do!

I doubt it would keep me from eating and sleeping, things I enjoy doing. Even if I didn't need to do them, I'm not prevented. I may not have the need, but the ring doesn't mention the desire. I'd still sleep 3 hours a day.. At least. I hope I wouldn't gain weight, eating on a sustained stomach.

But, how would I fill the time? I suspect I'd watch a lot more TV, which is depressing.. I'd probably end up reading a lot more, which is a plus.. My postcount would be higher than Crothian's in a few weeks, which is frightening..

It would be a useful item to have, but I doubt I'd wear it continuously. Once I found a place to keep it when it's not in use, I'd only wear it for special occasions, or when I was feeling poor, even with the one week wait time.
