What is BESM?

BESM is from Guardians of Order and is was originally written to handle anime-powered games. Its name comes form how anime is described; ie. characters having big eyes and a small mouth.

There is also a D20 variant of it as well; BESM D20. There is even an SRD of the basic rules found on the GoO website. Skimmed throught it, kinda interesting and allows for a wide range of characer options, but would seem to be a breeding ground for power gamers. But that ain't bad is it? :)

Though the Tri-Stat system works just fine for anything. (BESM isn't a system, it's a game... Tri-Stat is the system that powers BESM, HKAT, and a couple others)

I've used BESM to do: Greyhawk, Dragonlance, my own homebrew fantasy, the korean Ragnarok world, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, Rifts... It's very flexible, can be forced to do just about anything. And considering the rules fit in a trade-paperback sized book about 250 pages long... Makes for a great portable, quick system.

I have to agree with just about everything everyone else said.

It's a great system, totally versatile (designed that way) that allows a tremendously wide selection of character types.

It also allows horrid power gaming if the GM doesn't keep track of what all the PCs are doing.

All in all, it's very very good if you have a group who will work with the same power level and/or a group whose GM will keep track of the players well and keep them from running out of hand.

I have yet to see the d20 version, but I'm thinking of picking it up.
