What is Desert of Desolation and what to expect for figures?

I'm going to take that as a clear sign that there is going to be a new Desert of Desolation series, whether a remake or a return.

When they announced this set at the WotC distributor conference, they commented that it had the "coolest hook ever" for a DDM set. They wouldn't tell us any more at the time, and I haven't heard another word about what this cool hook will be. But I'm looking forward to finding out!

Maybe it is literally a giant plastic fishhook.

I played the original and it was designed so that you could fit it any setting whether it was a published cmapaign setting (we played it in Greyhawk) or a homebrew.

We had a blast playing it and our DM was excellent. Many fond memories from the original with hours of play.

As for what WotC is doing anew, I don't have a clue.

Anyone remember the Cave Fisher? Did that thing have hooks, or just a big sticky tongue?

They've already done the hooked horror, so it can't be that. Maybe a Large aquatic hooked horror? (What would that be doing in the desert, though?)

There's supposed to be more mounted dudes, and or special mount rules.

There are supposed to be mounts that other figures can ride. I remember this because they contrasted it with Mage Knight's way of doing it (without specifically saying that) in their typical "put down WizKids" comments you hear periodically from the miniature design team.

A new hooked horror would be cool, the old one was ugly and still too much money for me.

I'm sure there's a template in Sandstorm for a desert Hooked Horror. :)

I recall the the the old school Desert of Desolation was in the south of Greyhawk and was the remains of the Old Seuloise kingdom that had been destroyed in a rain of fire.

The original I series modules didn't specify where it was, on Oerth or elsewhere. I never found the Egyptian flavor a good match for the magically created deserts of the world, which I viewed as being much less hospitable than ancient Egypt.
