What is Final Fantasy all about?

I've played 7, 8, 9, 10 and 10-2. Among those, IMO - 7 is the best by far and one of the best CRPGs period, 8 would be good but suffers from a really stupid magic system, 9 is good, 10 is very good and the second best, 10-2 is unremarkable and the worst.

I would kill someone for a FF7 remake on PS3, as long as I can take the console and game with me in jail. Identical but for next-gen graphics, dubbed speech and digital sound. Added content optional.

I have a theory that like with trek, people tend to "imprint" on the first final fantasy game they play. I know none of them since VII which I loved to pieces, have ever seemed to quite measure up.

Interesting, but I know it doesn't apply to me.

My first FF game was good ol' FF1, back in high school. And while I 'like that game a whole lot', I absolutely adore IV, V, VI, VII, and Tactics. To this day, I cannot possibly choose my favorite out of those 5 games.

It looked SO good and there weren't any really good RPGs out on the PS1 yet (Wild Arms was a pleasant surprise that came out a few months earier out of nowhere) - anyone else remember Beyond the Beyond? I was so hungry for a PS1 RPG that I played through and beat that game.

I was just out of university starting my career, and they announced FF7 for this "PlayStation"... which previously I thought looked like a horrible system, with a completely out-to-lunch price considering what games were out for it. I bought it immediately, with Wipeout, Ghost in the Shell, and Wild Arms being my first 3 games. Beyond the Beyond was bought by my friend for me shortly after, as we desperately waited for the fall/winter FF7 release date.

While it wasn't my favorite, but still a fabulous game, I would also be up for this. I assume you've seen the PS3 tech demo with the remade FFVII intro? It's cruel, really. Looks soooooooo good...

I bought one after playing a few games on my friend's system. I did some research and picked up Resident Evil with it (talk about striking gold).

But yeah, the RPG front was pretty much King's Field (remember THAT one?!), Beyond the Beyond and Wild Arms until FFVII. I remember picking up my pre-order and looking at the box and nearly passing out with joy. It just looked so durn sweet and I had been waiting so long to see what happened after blowin' up that Mako reactor. Us PS1 RPG fans had a tough go of it for a while there.

Wow... I'd heard about the final fantasy update coming out (the V and VI updates were mere rumors, now thankfully confirmed), but it was about a year ago and I forgot all about it. I just checked out some screenshots from IGN... I'm almost more excited about these than I am for Final Fantasy XII

Unfortunately they only had screenshots of the FFIV remake and not FFV or FFVI. If anyone knows where to find some, let me know!

My favorite was FFVI (III in the US), and I've played since FFI.

Although I do think that the earlier ones (NES, SNES) are better than the later ones (PS).

FFVII was the first Final Fantasy Game I ever played (have since played all but the latest 2) and I have to say it was the first game I ever played that I could find no fault with at all...other than the fact it had an end

Great music, great cutscenes, compelling stories and inter character relations, easy to use and interesting controls, fun magic systems.. it as a series of games has got it all.
Even the fact that many of the same mnsters are used over and over albeit in different backgrounds (as all the games are essentially stand alone) doesnt detract from the experience as they are games you just struggle to put down or drag yourself away from.

Since the games are in pretty disparate universes connected by a handful of thematic elements, and seem to have wildly different systems, I can see why they haven't tried to make an FF RPG in the past. It would be further attaching fans to a game that Square isn't selling anymore (save for remakes). On the other hand, with FFXII re-using the FF Tactics world, and the FFXI MMORPG, a tabletop RPG might work better now.

Officially no, there hasn't been anything done (the Chocobo, aka Riding Bird, stats in Dragon #323 notwithstanding). It's odd to consider; since even taking into account how each game is separate, you'd think Square Enix would still realize there's hand-over-fist monetary potential in, say, a FFVII tabletop RPG. The closest thing we have so far is the fan work Final Fantasy Zero, by our own Kamikaze Midget.

Well, you are aware of the rest of the story (sequels and prequels) right? In addition to the FFVII game itself, there's also the CGI movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and the anime OVA Last Order. There are two novelizations, titled "Maiden Who Travels The Planet," which was in the Ultimania Omega Guide for FFVII, and "On The Way To A Smile," which is being released (in Japanese only) on the Advent Children website. There's also the games FFVII: Before Crisis, FFVII: Crisis Core, and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus. However, from what I understand, these last two games aren't out yet, and the first one is only available on cell phones in Japan.
