What is Final Fantasy all about?

IWhat else is this franchise into? I seem to remember an anime movie a while back....

I won't list everything here, but in regards to films, there's been a grand total of five.

Advent Children is a CGI full-length movie that is a sequel to FFVII.

Last Order is a 30-minute anime OVA that is a prequel to FFVII.

Legend of the Crystals is a set of four 30-minute anime OVAs that are a sequel to FFV.

Final Fantasy Unlimited is a set of twenty-five anime TV episodes. It is set in its own universe (though it has easter egg references to other FF games).

The Spirits Within is a CGI full-length movie that was set in its own universe.

If you're looking to jump into the series, you can really start anywhere, since they are loosely related at best (in most cases) and even the ones that are related don't necessarily need to be played in any specific order (FFX and FFX-2 an exception!). If you own a PS2, you may want to try Final Fantasy X first. Or, perhaps an even better suggestion (depending on who you ask), pick up a copy of Final Fantasy VII (released for the original Playstation) and play that first. You can buy it new for around $20--maybe less.

If you're going to play them on a PS 1/PS 2 you could even start with Final Fantasy Origins if you find a copy, which is just a compilation of the first two games.

My personal favorites are II, VII, IX, and Tactics, although I generally like all the games in the series. FF II is amazing for an NES game with a pretty decnt plotline, and it's also one of the more challenging games in the series. FF VII is probably the one game in the entire main series that I like the most. FF IX has a great whimsical feel to it, it's not as serious and angsty as the previous two games were. Tactics is one of the leading contenders for all time top personal favorite game. It's got great gameplay, and a great story (though the translation is pretty dodgy in places).
