The troll thing is a no-brainer in my opinion.
ANY creature that gets back up after the group thinks it's dead is getting burned. It should be obvious to anyone on the planet that if a creature can't be killed by cutting it into pieces of meat, then you have to destroy the meat.
Cut a piece of meat in half. What is it? It's still meat.
Leave a piece of meat over the campfire too long. What is it? It's charcoal...
That string of logic should be followable by any man, woman or child who has ever cooked or watched someone else cook.
If the person has seen acid and knows what it can do to stuff... Bonus.
Yeah sure, you can argue that they might not start out using fire. I'll buy that. I'd use my sword before I tried a torch. But when the monster starts healing before my eyes without the benefit of incantations and arm waving. It's roasting time.
