What is the BEST char gen software available?

RPG support software comparison

Is there a thorough character support comparison somewhere? One that compares, for example, the datasets, the number of clicks it takes to create a magic item, a 10th level fighter, or if I can affect my were-beholder with magic fang? I really enjoyed looking over the feature comparison for the virtual table top software over at iCon, and would love to see something similar for RPG tools.

I haven't seen one.

Good information guys. Thanks!

I haven't made up my mind yet since it will be a month or two before I'm playing regularly again. So feel free to post your thoughts and insights about character generators if you haven't already.

The Only Sheet for DnD 3.5 is an Excel-based character sheet. I use it exclusively for creating NPCs. One of the users has created a DM sheet that allows you to load multiple character sheets simultaneously. It supports saving of entire characters, or individual custom classes and races.

Pretty soon, the creator will be releasing a new program that contains almost the entire SRD. It will have cool abilities that you usually don't see in Excel, like if you select a magic item, it automatically updates your character with the bonuses applied by the magic item. I am a beta tester for the new sheet. It takes into account all stacking rules. Some of the amazing features:
  • I created a level 100 character in less than an hour, assigning all skill points and feats.
  • When creating a custom race, if I select a type, it automatically applies all aspects of that type to the character (although I can override any of the abilities I choose to negate). For example, a Construct automatically loses its constitution score, but a Warforged is a Living Construct, so it simply adds it back in.
  • The online community is practically sitting around waiting to answer questions. I have rarely seen a question go unanswered for more than 24 hours.
  • While only OGL material is included with the sheet, it can support just about any material. It offers saving functionality so that you can share your work.
  • Anything that has a numerical effect can be integrated into the sheet, allowing for nearly limitless customization. If you see something extra that you would like, you can post it. If it is an easy update, chances are, you will see it integrated within 24 hours.
  • Gestalt classes, which are impossible in most character sheets are easy to implement. The 11 listed in the SRD are already included!!!

If you have any questions, you can post here: TOS Forum

TOS+ (the new product) will be released very soon now!!
I have made a small video to showcase the LapTop worksheet - you can see it here. This shows you PART of the LapTop worksheet, which is actually designed to FIT a LapTop screen (to avoid scrolling during play) - and shows you HOW effects are dynamically applied to your Character DURING PLAY!

I have been using this on my LapTop for a couple of months now, and it is so awesome to simply type in "Haste", while all my Pen & Paper buddies are scribbling the effect of Haste on their paper sheets! hehe

If you want to be advised when TOS+ becomes available, you can join the Mailing List.

Cheers

Just dropping in to say that I tried out Redblade and that works well, too. I rolled up about ten characters of varying classes/levels over the weekend and didn't have any problems.

The only nitpick I have about it is that I can't find spell scrolls in the shop. Other than that, it worked great...and I didn't end up with a sheet that spanned 11 pages as in other programs.
