I would say to play a half-orc barbarian. Unlike playing a fighter, you don't have a lot of feats to select, so you can just take Weapon Focus and be done with it until 3rd level (by which time you should have a better understanding of the game). You wear some armor (probably a chain shirt, but a breastplate, chain mail, or even scale mail won't penalize you much). And you get angry and hit things with your two-handed sword. You have a pretty solid character that doesn't require much finesse or knowledge of the rules. You also don't start out on the sidelines or as a support character--you're right in the thick of things which I think would be more fun.
As you get higher level, you will experience some of the ways other rules work and will have the opportunity to develop your character in a direction that requires a bit more finesse. But you don't have to if you don't want to.
