Bit of a silly question, this, but I haven't been into a FLGS for a long time (sadness...)

What scale are these minis?
It's not quite as standardized as most, but they're roughly between 25mm and 28mm scale. The recent Chainmail minis sets are roughly the same scale, but a touch larger on average. So, I'd say D&DM are closer to the 25mm end of the scale.

It is a great game, if you want a game more like chess than like role playing (it isn't chess, by a long stretch, but it isn't role playing either).

I've played with kids as young as 8, no problem.

If you want to start, buy the most recent starter set, wardrums. Buy a few boosters - preferably underdark, angelfire, or wardrums - the all have nice minis for playing the game. Once you are hooked, find a FLGS that sells commons and uncommons for $1 or less, and rares for $5-15 each. If you can't, go to maxminis and find the DDM marketplace thread and they'll link you to on-line stores, or just search ebay for auggest's store. You can buy plenty of minis that way - much cheaper than boosters.

One strategy is to stick to 2 or 3 factions, and buy those minis over time. That is cheaper than trying to get minis for all 4 factions. Beware, if you like it at all, you will spend money quickly!

DDM is a hole that money may enter but never escape. Unfortunately it tends to suck all money from the surrounding landscape into it.
If you've seen the end of the "Evil Dead 2" you have an idea of what DDM does to money.
It is also known as plasticrack. I am a plasticrack addict.
