What is the minimum level would you play if you were never to gain xp again?

Please read my post first. What level would you play if you never gained xp again?

you mean like a level cap in a computer game? i don't know, maybe 12, very powerful but not too powerful at the same time, and you still have a long 12 levels to advance before that.

I voted "What, are you crazy?" I don't think I would play in such a game, at least not for the long run. The monsters don't have a level limit and one of the fundamental bases of the game is advancement, and to advance realativly easily up to a point and then just stop would really put a damper on the game. An alternate XP system such as one where the XP needed for advancement doubles each level would work as it would allow advancement but still effectivly put an end to the higher levels or at least quick advancement.

In 2E, it felt like advancement ground to a halt after 7th or so... you played an awfully long time at 7 and 8. Almost the situation you describe, so I expect a lot of players could be comfortable (if not happy) stuck at 7. Similar thing was true in B/E/S/M, unless you were getting a lot of gold (there was no XP for gold in 2E except for rogues).

Never played 1E or OD&D, don't know how that was.

I initially wanted to answer "you're crazy!," but it occurs to me that 12th level is usually the height of my characters' careers. They've got a simultaneous level-derived feat and ability-score increase, they have enough experience to define them as characters and enough power to take on cool monsters with neato tricks, but not so much that they mow down all opposition. Twelfth level characters have access to sixth-level spells, but are still reasonably cautious about third-level spells. Fighters get three attacks, while rogues and wizards still get only two, and there's a fair discrepancy between the skill behind those attacks (+12,+7,+2;+9,+4;+6,+1). Likewise, there is a significant differentiation between skill-using and non-skill-using classes (24 pts vs. 96 pts).

I guess I just like 12th level.

9 is about right. Two stat bumps and three feats, 5th level spells. Powerful, not too fragile, but not uber either.

That's how I voted, for the same reasons.
