What is the right game for me?

I'd go with Basic Fantasy (BFRPG) and start the PCs at a higher level to avoid fragility. (Actually, I'd probably go with Swords & Wizardry, but I think BFRPG is probably "rules tighter" than S&W.) Microlite 20 would be another one worth considering.

I'm also doing to suggest BFRPG at higher levels. Swords & Wizardry at higher levels might fit the bill too (ascending AC is optional). Both of those trade a little bit on the "PCs feel mechanically different" front.

I would be wary of suggesting WFRP 2e. It's a great game, but it relies almost as heavily on a battlemat as 3e if you play RAW and, depending on what kind of character creation options you use, PCs can be either really powerful or really fragile to start out with. Plus, it's not really what I would call "traditional" fantasy, although it could be modified to be more Tolkienesque if you wanted to invest the time.

Castles and Crusades might also be worth a look.

I will also agree that Savage Worlds might be good for you.

I only just got the book, so I haven't read it all or had time to digest much of it, but RuneQuest II might be worth looking into.

Another vote here for both Castles & Crusades and Savage Worlds.

Both really solid systems mathematically with logical power curves and a ferocious rate of play, bust out 5-8 encounters in 3 hour sessions at times.

C&C I find best for the almighty delve and exploring old modules of yore, whilst savage worlds is supremely adaptable to all kinds of action based adventuring provided you spend a bit more time in prep.

I use these for my "break down the door" groups, M&M for my heavy roleplayers, and Pathfinder (low magic/mass battles) for my "damn near wargamers/amateur historians" group.
