What is wrong with race class limits?

Conversely, one's race (human, elf, dwarf, or whatever) is who you are, not merely something you have. I can't imagine being a non-human because I am human. Seriously, try to imagine being an eagle. The best we humans can do is imagine being a human mind inside of an eagle's body.

Not everyone's imagination is so limited.

If I played in a game where the DM considered himself imaginative enough to roleplay dragons, gods, monsters of all kinds and every NPC we encountered, but I wasn't allowed to play a dwarf because I simply can't fathom the intricacies of roleplaying a non-human race, I think I'd start looking for another game.

But I can't even begin to imagine not being human. I can't even take the first step.

Then, as DM, how do you play your non-human NPCs?

Also QFT.

(On the other hand, if the DM wanted a "human PCs only" game to maintain a particular "feel" I would have no problem with that whatsoever.)

Quoting your QFT for T.

I would not - could not - get in a game where the DM was all about "Okay, I can RP a shoggoth, mad cultist, nazi, black dragon, cyber-hacker, kobold lieutenant, radioactive mutant, but you, you can't be a dwarf. You don't 'know how to act like one'."

That's fine for me too. The DM has a particular rationale for keeping everyone human. That's fair game as far as I'm concerned.

QFT (and enjoying my Warforged character, thank you very much!) :)

Feel, flavor or theme I can respect, just as I respect low magic variants, evil campaigns and Asian-themed gestalt campaigns where everyone gestalts with monk. Flavor is fine.

But I know about as much, from direct life experience, about playing a dwarf as I do playing a barbarian from the steppes. Or a wizard who can cast fireball. A lot of this stuff seems human being IT IS HUMAN. Humans invented it, humans play the roleplaying games and humans came up with the ideas, anyway.
