Six feet end to end, three and five-tenths feet central diameter, tapering to one foot at each end. Like a barrel with five bulging ridges in place of staves. Lateral breakages, as of thinnish stalks, are at equator in middle of these ridges. In furrows between ridges are curious growths – combs or wings that fold up and spread out like fans. . . which gives almost seven-foot wing spread. Arrangement reminds one of certain monsters of primal myth, especially fabled Elder Things in [the] Necronomicon.
—H.P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness

The Elder Things were the first alien species to come to the Earth, colonizing the planet about one billion years ago. They stood roughly eight feet tall and had the appearance of a huge, oval-shaped barrel with starfish-like appendage at both ends. The top appendage was a head adorned with five eyes, five eating tubes, and a set of cilia for "seeing" without light. The bottom appendage was five-limbed and was used for walking and other forms of locomotion. The beings also had five leathery, retractable wings and five sets of tentacles that sprouted from their torsos. Both their tentacles and the slits housing their folded wings were spaced at regular intervals about their bodies.

The Elder Things were vegetable-like in shape, having radial symmetry instead of the bilateral symmetry of bipeds. They also differed in that they had a five-lobed brain. In terms of nutrition and reproduction, the Elder Things exhibited vegetal as well as animal characteristics. Though they could make use of both organic and inorganic substances, the Elder Things were preferably carnivorous. They were also amphibious.

The bodies of the Elder Things were incredibly tough, capable of withstanding the pressures of the deepest ocean. Few died except by accident or violence. The beings were also capable of hibernating for vast epochs of time. Nonetheless, unlike other beings of the mythos, the Elder Things were made of normal, terrestrial matter.

Kromaggs: My favorite 'alien' I love to hate [Sliders]

[imagel]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/07/Kromagg2.JPG[/imagel] [imager]http://www.bureau-13.com/picts/sliders-kromagg.jpg[/imager]

The Kromaggs (also known pejoratively as "Maggs" and "Maggots" by Humans), are a species of humanoid primates from the science fiction television show, Sliders. They are very technologically advanced, with machines that can control gravity, create forcefields, handheld energy weapons and aircraft ("manta" ships) equipped with energy weapons and dimensional travel capabilities. Their society is highly militaristic, and their stated agenda is to conquer all human-dominated alternate Earths in preparation for an assault on the world they call Kromagg Prime, the world the humans on that Earth originally drove them from after a World War.

Professor Maximillian Arturo, Rembrandt Brown, Quinn Mallory, and Wade Welles first encountered the Kromaggs in the season two episode "Invasion" on one of the more than 150 Earths they had subjugated. It was revealed in the episode that when the Kromaggs began dimensional travelling, they were shocked to see world after world dominated by Homo sapiens. They both hate and fear Humans, considering them "vermin" and the enemy and have treated them accordingly. Kromaggs conquer most alternate Earths they encounter and keep those humans they didn't kill for slave labor, breeding purposes, or as test subjects. They find Humans as ugly as Humans find them ugly, though they prize Human eyes as a delicacy to eat.

Exiled from Kromagg Prime, the Kromaggs put a stop to their tribal wars with each other, uniting under a government known as the Kromagg Dynasty. Through dimensional travelling technology, they set about building their empire, traveling from Earth to Earth and claiming most as their own under a brutal occupation. They do not conquer all worlds however, as one episode revealed that the Kromaggs performed a hit-and-run assault on an unsuspecting Earth by stealing it's fuel reserves and leaving, forcing Humans on that parallel to make do without automobiles and such.

Appearance
Kromaggs appear very similar to humans, though differently evolved. Their teeth are sharp and pointed and their skin is distorted and ridged with a dark pigment. They all appear to bald and with no facial hair. They are presumably evolved from Cro-Magnon man.

Their officers dress in grey uniforms similar to Wehrmacht uniforms, while their troops dress in black "SWAT"-type uniforms. Their pilots dress in flight suits.

Society
Little is known of their society. It appears to be highly militaristic, with little forgiveness for failure among its members. One episode had two Kromagg soldiers sentenced to death for letting the human protagonists escape through no fault of their own. Another episode had a former commander of the famed "12th Legion" being forced to command a prison world for losing a battle on "Kromagg Prime" he couldn't win.

Kromaggs appear to despise human sentimentality (such as pity) and are insulted when such feelings are directed toward them. They require no sentimentality when "breeding" amongst each other.

One episode made a passing reference to Kromagg "Houses"; presumably Kromagg's are also organized by Clans of similar kin.

Their current homeworld has been described as a large forest with tall trees.

Psychic Abilities
Some Kromaggs possess psychic abilities. Though they cannot read minds, some have the ability to project illusions and plant post-hypnotic suggestions into human minds. One episode had one Kromagg attempt to force data out of someone's minds by touch, similar to Star Trek's Vulcan "mind meld". Otherwise, the Kromaggs resort to interrogation, "mind probes" and torture to acquire information.

Almost all Kromaggs however, appear to have an illusion-casting ability which allows them to look Human.

Kromaggs have healing powers, where they can heal people with their minds. One person was healed from radiation poisioning though Kromagg healing techniques. In the episode Asylum, a human trained by the Kromaggs was able to heal Quinn with Kromagg healing powers. This suggests that the healing powers of the Kromaggs can also be taught to humans.

If I had to pick one, I'd pick the Kafers from 2300. Here's what's said about them on Wikipedia:

2300 Wikipedia Article said:
Mankind has met with several alien species, all of which are decidedly strange and truly alien, from the genetically-engineered Pentapod to the vicious Kafers (The game writers coined this name based on the German word Käfer for bug, not on the Afrikaans ethnic slur "kaffir".) The Kafers are the most humanoid of the alien species, but unfortately a quirk of their physiology makes war between Kafer and mankind inevitable. Kafer physiology features a hormone, roughly analogous to adrenaline in humans that also functions as a neural accelerant. Kafers literally become smarter once they start fighting. Consequently, their entire civilisation is dependent upon institutionalised violence, which makes them extremely warlike. In 2301 the Kafer start an invasion of human space that will be costly to both attackers and defenders and serves as one of the major dramatic events of the game line.

I haven't found any good pictures of them to post. They look sort of like a cross between the Aliens and cockroaches.

The vaasi for Dawning Star is the best part of Helios Rising IMO. They are insectoid, extremely paranoid (to the point of killing all other sapients), manipulate their own genome to create many servitor races and absolutely love the taste of their own blood (thus controlling their own population).

The hivers for Traveller are pretty spiffy. They are pacifists who won a war by converting herbivores into carnivores. The herbivores in question are the k'kree- horse like people who exterminate all carnivores they discover. The hiver ability to socially adjust other species is unparalled and try to incorporate everyone into hiver society.

Star*Drive has the gandercat. They were once a powerful species on their planet and have reverted to a non-technological state. No one has been able to discover why and it seems they do have a verbal history that includes that time.

Primal Urge's Emerging Forms line has several races I think would make excellent alien species. The euqsam are plants that use dead bodies to move about. They look like wooden masks surrounded by tendrils. The rynoth are a external parasite that control their host through pain. They look like Small frog humanoids. The d'ah rien are psionic humanoid insects that try to spread peace and psionic knowledge. Cyndarim are evil jellyfish (the humanoid parts can be eliminated to make it more alien). They use an ability to change colors, octopus style, to control others. Zure are Small humanoids that are driven to discover technology and can "smell" it if nearby. And a few others.

And hoops are mutant rabbits from Gamma World. Insane barbarian carnivores, they have the ability to convert metal to rubber with touch.

I emjoy the Ferengi from the Star Trek universe the most; they be my favorite aliens. I mean, come on! A race of profit hungry merchants are too good to pass up.
