My signature is a hilarious screenshot from an old NES game that for the life of me I can't remember anymore.

The game is STARTROPICS!

My avatar is Saturnin. Some kind of talking duck in a french TV show for kids in the '70.

Mine is a cartoon ninja from Ninja Gaiden II for the NES. Noramlly in between acts there is an action cutscene that slides a pic of a ninja from right to left or some such. When you go into the secret sound select screen (holy alliteration, Batman!), the same ninja pops up cartoony, or chibi.

Ryu Hayabusa is the panultimate hero biscuit of Ninja games. :)

Mine is the DM from the Jeff Easley cover that graced the Dungeon Master's Guide (also the DM's screen) in the later half of the first edition era.

The dark lord Thanos, nihilistic several time conquerer of the universe, who always ends up creating just enough of a flaw in his conquests of reality to allow himself to be defeated, because deep down he knows that he isn't truly worthy of ruling all of Creation.

He is powerful enough to shrug off attacks from the Silver Surfer and screw other Mephitso with impunity. He makes Galactus wary and is barred from the realm of Death.

He is a bad, bad man.

My signature is an image of Ryoko Hakubi Masaki, a biological construct created by the goddess-taken-human-form named Washu Hakubi, a former space pirate and so-called demon, who has fallen in love with a human boy who she was forced to watch grow up while she was imprisoned in a cave in Japan for 700 years. She's something of a mascot for me and I us her image almost everywhere, I even created custom bumperstickers with my signature image on it.

I've noticed that mine doesn't show up on all computers. This is probably due to some sort of browser issue.

FWIW, I can see it on my computer (really old browser & PC from 1999), but not on much newer computers located at my University (up to the minute browsers & PCs from 2005 & newer).

Aside from that.......the identity of my avatar is...........A SECRET!!!

(Well, it's at least a secret if you're under 30)
