Well not as much SL hatred as I thought. :) C-Cow, well wonder if it's me that's get's on your nerves or just the setting in general?

Just not my cup of tea. I dislike it for the same reason I dislike Watermelons, I just don't like it. I'd play in it, but I wouldn't DM it nor would I buy a product from it unless it was something utterly fantastic that I could steal from it.:D

....Does your imagination have end at what was presented in the Core Rulebooks?

...The fact here is that the Forgotten Realms is the ONLY official game setting published by WotC, the people that brought you the very game itself....

...You like to make your point by talking about characters starting with magic items, but have you “really” looked at the rules? Most of them are Potions or Scrolls, one shot items at best. They don’t unbalance or throw the entire fabric of reality out of whack. What is wrong with a character starting off with a masterwork weapon?...

....The point I’m trying to make here is a lot of Forgotten Realms detractors seem to be hanging on to some strange paradigm that defines what a D&D world should be in their eyes. They fail to see that the people who actually make the game see the Forgotten Realms as what a Dungeons and Dragons Campaign Setting is, based of the rules that were presented in the Core Books....

...What is wrong with having such a wide array of races? Look at the wide variety of races and cultures in our own world. Why would it be different to have so many offshoots in a fantasy world?
Ren

Goodness me, I just answered the points brought up by Meepo in as clear of a fashion as I know how & look what I started...

Ren,

I'm sure you love the Realms & that's just peachy, but the critiques I've listed are completely valid. As for that first "shot across the bow" there's nothing at all wrong with my imagination (check out my profile if you wish). I just don't like the FR that's all. Chill.

Last I checked the Greyhawk setting is the official setting of 3e.

And yes I do think letting a PC start off with a Masterwork Long sword or a scroll w/ 2 webs on it (for Waterdhavians or however those folk from Waterdeep are called) is quite a bit ahead of the standard PHB/Greyhawk 1st level character both in terms of survivability and starting wealth. I did not say that it throws off "the entire fabric of reality," but clearly it is indicative of a VERY magical world where potions & scrolls are everywhere.

Thus, the Forgotten Realms has an above-average magical level. That was my point in the first place, nothing more.

There's nothing 'wrong' with it. I just don't like it & thus I (and many others as you may have noticed) voted against FR.

And no, the designers do not see FRCS as the "way D&D is." Again I believe that would be Greyhawk.

Finally, there is nothing wrong with having a good deal of choice for starting PC races, but we've already got quite a few in the PHB. With all the Saurials, Drow, Half-Dragons, Planetouched, etc., the FR just seems a bit OTT to me.

But of course I like settings to be vaguely referential to the fantasy novels I read and with the exception of the FR dreck, you just don't see that many sentient races in Lieber, Tolkien, Martin, Moorcock, Jordan, Howard, etc. Just an opinion...

Oh and by the way, I believe Humans (albeit with vast differences in cultures) are the only PC race on Earth :D

Now enough Forgotten Realms chain pulling ;)

Have Fun!

I was going to check the Forgotten Realms, but then I saw Spelljammer.

D&D in a space-like setting based on 19th century theories just doesn't cut it for me.

Besides, it brought up memories of long ago of a player of mine saying over and over in my Greyhawk Campaign:

"Can I play a Kender? Huh? Can I?"

Me: "No. There are no Kender on Greyhawk."

Him: "But what if they came by Spelljammer?"

Me: "They didn't."

Him: "But come on...I wanna play a Kender."

Me: "No"

And so on...

Ok, you're lucky you posted this. I was about to throw you out of the ENWorld Cow Club for Not Liking Scarred Lands For No Good Reason :D

I voted Dragonlance for the reasons so many others have already said (the rail roading mainly). And I just found it hard to believe that steel was so rare as to be used as currency but guys would still run around in plate armour and carry swords. I would be melting down my sword & armour and buying a freaking castle with the proceeds :)

I do have to say that I have played in a DL campaign (about 8 sessions) that I enjoyed - we just took the roles of the characters from the books and saw how far we could get from the beaten path (drove our poor DM to distraction).

YES! I do wish to take advantage of this one in a lifetime opportunity to realise that the quality of a campaign is up to me as a DM, and my players. I realise that I may be disabused of the notion that a commercial campaign setting can be used as a primary determinant of potential campaign quality, and be introduced to the idea that if I identify with the core D&D archetypes, there's usually enough of them intact in a commercial D&D setting to fit my tastes.

Please rush me my clue! Enclosed is a cheque for the total of $10 for the privilege of this newfound insight.

I voted for Dragonlance because it felt like the PCs would always be the supporting cast to the Heroes of the Lance and the setting was just not interesting, kinda your run-of-the-mill fantasy setting written in the seventies.

I liked the concept for Birthright but the rules for running a realm felt like a Confusion spell with a DC 50!

Nightfall,

I love Scarred Lands... but it wasn't quite enough to bring me away from the Realms after all. However, I do support the setting by buying every product they produce... I'm sure I'll run there someday. :)

Ren

I know Ren and while I like the Realms and have a few sourcebooks, it's not enough to make me come back. :)

Ah well I understand that. :) It's not for everyone. (Just wish I could convince my gaming group of that! :) ) Still I would say, try out Hollowfaust:City of Necromancers. If you still don't like it, send me the copy! ;) Seriously, just look it over and if you like it, good. If not, then hey, I'm glad you gave it a shot.

Don't mind Rouncer there. He's one of those passionate people that enjoys things the way HE likes. Doesn't make him wrong, just different. :)

Tell you what... a year from now, when the new Dragonlance Campaign Setting comes out, give it a look-see.

That would certainly be fair; I'll take a look at it. To be honest there were a couple of things I did like about the setting, mainly the Orders of Knighthood and the Towers of Sorcery. I also like the idea of minotaurs as player characters. Unfortunately, these things were far outweighed by the annoying things.

I hope one of the seeds for the new Dragonlance is the "War of Slapping Some Sense Into the Three Comic Relief Races of Krynn."

:D
