I voted for FR, not because I really actively hate it, but just because I hate what has been done to it.

Without Elminster, Drizzt, The Simbul....it would just be a hackneyed Europe with lotsa magic.

That, though uncreative, I can live with.

It's the fact that any main character in a novel is inherently unbeatable. It's like they should all have the "Author's Favorite" PrC, which gives them immunity to everything.

But FR may be getting new life with my future postapocalyptic FR campaign. I think it'll be a lot more palatable to me with Elminster's skull being used as a drinking bowl for some orcish lord.

.....and for all of you who voted PS....I know where you live. ;)

(Oh, and if you may be interested, I could see if I could convince you otherwise....but maybe you're not interested. :))

WAAAAHHH Kalamar sucks. It seems too "I-Wanna-Be-The-Realms". That, plus the advert for it in Dragon was a little too hypey. (Hype kills, look what it does to Palladium...) The advert for FRCS had Aznar Thrul's pic with the phrase "Evil is Everywhere.". That screams cool. Judging by adverts? Maybe I don't know what I'm saying.

(besides, I'd buy Spelljammer regardless of hype...)

Spelljammer

OK, I HATE Spelljammer to a degree, but also enjoy it. Most of the other settings I really can't say much about because I know so little. I was VERY, VERY excited about Dark Sun and still enjoy the idea of Dark SUn, just eeks out coolness.

I can see the problems with FR and DL, and they are the same criticisms I have. Novels kill campaign settings, plain and simple. I know people who collect White WOlf WOD stuff just because of the meta plot and don't even play RPGs. Canon sux is it doesn't allow the DM to make the focus on the PCs and novels that tell the most epic tales set canon. I also think that world histories should be detailed enough to create plot ideas, but not so tight as to become disrupted if a DM decides to bring Tharizdun into his setting because RTTTOEE is so damn cool. I still love FR though and DL is cool in the hands of the right DM.

Greyhawk seemed boring, not to mention the names of half the places were stupid. The Duchy of Geoff? Jeff? Hello? Was this invented by a DM in junior high?

Gary Gygax invented Greyhawk, he also contributed something else to the hobby...

I voted other (Or at least I will when it will take my vote... keeps saying it's an invalid session).

My least favorite setting is 2nd edition Forgotten Realms. I had to vote Other because I don't want anyone to think that I dislike 3rd edition's Forgotten Realms in any way. It's absolutely amazing how a campaign setting can move from worst to 1st so quickly.

I disliked the 2nd edition Realms for a number of reasons. The primary one though is the NPCs. It drove me absolutely crazy that so many NPCs broke the rules and/or were given abilities that the designers specifically stated could never be learned by PCs. I hated how omni-present they were, constantly trying to take the focus away from the PCs. I hated how PCs were so strongly recommended to make Shadowdale their home base, the small-town home of so many uber-characters.

Now the 3rd Edition Realms... if it weren't for Planescape, it would've easily gotten my vote for favorite campaign setting. :)

Ah crap! *grumbles*

My vote would have been for Spelljammer--can't stand the thought of such whacky physics, even in a fantasy game--but my dog just scared the crap of out me, made me click the wrong thing and drop the keyboard out of my lap onto the ground....

After mulling around for a negative feeling towards a setting for a while...none of the above, really. All of these campaign settings are what you make them...

Now, if we were doing a "worst adventure" poll, then I'd have something to say - bad adventures have less redeeming features because they dictate play more than campaign settings do, and are therefore more of an uphill battle for the DM to fix...

Okay I don't like Dragonlance or Forgotten realms mainly for the reasons already stated - too much magic.

I don't like Rokugan as the OA setting. I like OA and I liked Kara-tur but Rokugan is just too Japanese-esque, they should have done broad Asia or even Chinese-esque with Rokugan as the main site of published adventures that would have been better.

Liked Birthrights concept and Spelljammers too

Mainly though I just homebrew.

I buy it! I agree 150% with the rest of your comment.

Wow. I am surprised to see the level of distaste for the Realms. After all, they sell a lot o' product. Who buys it?

One point (sure to start some friendly debate) is that each setting is only as unique, innovative, overpowered, underpowered, munchkin, power gamerd, or entertaining as the dm who runs it. I have seen exciting planescape, boring Greyhawk, distasteful Realms, exciting Realms, and horrid homebrews. Just some random thoughts.
