What keeps Shadows from taking over the world?

Appearently the Shadows have learned to type, they are trying to distract us from the topic at hand. :D

It's an important thing to note. Im my game the party had a single shadow escape. They thought nothing of it and went explorer into the mountains leaving the small village they had thought was safe. They get back, everyone has been turned into shadows. One turned into dozens in a week.

Well, ya, but a lot of DMs (at least the ones I play with) like to keep some sense of what the various monsters in the world are up to, and how they fit into the world....so questions about what keeps shadows in check are pretty relevant towards that end....

Anyway, I agree with the "Extremely poor organizational skills" post, as well as that the various churches would keep them in line if some shadows stumbled onto a helpless village and took it over (causing an "outbreak").

To hell with Shadows, they pale in comparison with Spectres.

Int 14, Wis 14. Obvisously capable of cooperation. The only things keeping them from taking over the world; Clerics and the pesky need to haunt the place they died (but how large of an area is that anyway... hmmm).

Yeah

I kinda use it similar. Ghosts and all that stuff (wraiths, shadows, spectres, whatever) all need a reason to exist. Or a place to haunt. Otherwise it's boring Hack&Slash crap.

Shadows already have a reason to exist. The in-game reason is that their mortal souls were the tragic victims of being overcome by shadowstuff, causing them to rise and shun both light and the living. What's boring is having all undead universally hiding in mansions or cemetaries, rattling chains, and going "ooooOOOOoooo...." *yawn*

I *like* the idea of walking nightmares that can spread throughout the countryside like an epidemic, just as long as there are methods to prevent this or overcome it. Absolutely *priceless* oppurtunity for adventure.
