What Kind of Books…

Previously I started a thread for what kinds of books people would like to see and/or purchases that have not been covered or only poorly covered. The consensus seemed to be the following subjects have not been adequately covered in the market.

• Terrains (desert, artic, mountain, etc)
• Do It Your Self Guides (for creating spells, monsters, adventures)
• East Indian Setting
• Native American Setting

Has anything been left out?

On a related note, what kind of books do you think you will buy next for your game?

I'd like to see a "How to be a [Archetype] book" eg "how to be a bounty hunter" or "how to be a polician" or "how to be an adventuring mage"...

I found a cool bounty hunting site, but that doesn't help me if the issue comes up during a game.

Oh yeah, a book of swashbuckling feats would be cool, too.

Time magic, its been done but never done well.

I'm writing one of those right now, actually.

The Time Mage, a pdf for the Forgotten Archetypes series I'm publishing through Ronin Arts.

It's a base class, some feats and a whole raft of time-based spells. It's... not an easy one to write, that's for sure. But it's turning out pretty neat so far.

Personally, I'd like to see thematic books, sourcebooks written to help a group run adventures which recall specific fantasy genres: sword & sorcery is covered, but there's room for sagas, fairy tales, urban fantasy, etc.

Wasn't there a Chronomage in 2e?

Yep, there was. A 64 pager called "Chronomancy", I believe.

It was not particularly usable in most campaigns, as I recall, as the Chronomancer's powers didn't mesh well with a traditional adventuring group.

Question: Has anyone done a book based on medieval Russia or Eastern Europe? I'm asking more out of curiosity than anything (I'm doing graduate work in Russian history).

Well, there are three that I know of out there, but none for D20

There was the old game Rus -- I think it was put out by a group like "Rus Games" back in the early 1990s. The rules weren't so hot, but the material was fun, including how much protection from the cold different types of clothing would give you :)

Then there was GURPS Russia -- sort of idealized lacquer-box Russian legendary era. Lots of stuff on how cities were constructed, on Baba Yaga & the Firebird, and on drinking capacity! ;)

The last one I know about is The Dragon & The Bear, which was put out for Ars Magica. Lots of material on Kievan-Rus, including basic city maps, etc., bits on old Russian gods, etc., and a section warning about the imminent arrival of the Golden Horde (the game is technically set in 1220, but this supplement suggests beginning play a bit earlier, otherwise you will just be overrun by the Mongols pretty quickly).

All three books are excellent in their own ways!

I'm not sure if any of these are still in print; sadly, I doubt it.
