4. Story
3. Kicking Butt

Brilliant Planning almost won out, but it is still just more gratifying when my character does something awesome spur of the moment, than when I do something awesome, just as planned.

I also have to give a nod to Story. It's what keeps you coming back.

And who doesn't love kicking butt?

All of the above.

Seriously, this thread is like Charlie's Chocolate Factory, how am I only supposed to pick one bizzare flavour of goodness?

Team Combat -- We don't need a plan; we just need each other. In most sports, I like playing the defense. (In strategy games, I love playing the Allies in WWII.) I'm the same way in D&D -- I like playing nearly unkillable characters -- usually clerics, paladins, or fighter/clerics -- and helping other characters with last minute healing, a well-timed Bulls Strength, or even just pulling their butt to safety when they're down and we need to retreat.

Secondarily, I like Story.

Tertially, I get my jollies from killing things. Taking their stuff is nice, but it doesn't much matter to me. ;)

As player my primary motivation is definitely the tactician role, which does not only extend to the battle mat, but every aspect of the game.

Tough choice. Cool Powers, Treasure hunting, Exploration, Brilliant Planning; depending on the moment, any of these could apply, but I always need a good story, whether it is the simple story of a single adventure, the weavings of a campaign arc or the stories of the PCs.

My main focus in playing is the role playing aspect of the game. I don't care what race/class/position I play.... and I usually end up filling out the party with whatever is needed... However, I like to take that role, and I usually find a new and distinct personality for him/her to play.

Gimme a story I can sink my fangs into and a character who really meshes into the tale, someone full of passion, anxiety, heroics, and romance!

Everything else will fall into place, as needed. ;)
