what kind of plot do you like?

Are you a fan of epic plots, where the characters end up in huge battles to save the world in huge all-or-nothing battles, much like the Lord of the Rings?

Or do you prefer plots like those in the hobbit? Still heroic, but nothing world-spanning?

Or do you prefer something more in-between, or something not even mentioned?

Epic all the way for this gamer. :) I always sem to end up weaving tales of Gods, artifacts and huge world threatening plans rather than the low key stuff. Like my current campaign- I've got a Worm that Walks seeking to open the gates to the far realm and bring the elder gods in all their glory to Faerun. Good stuff (IMO).

I've managed to totally botch the few epic campaigns I've tried to run, so I've pretty given up and gone with 'threatening to the characters and the world but by no means world ending' quests. Been working out good so far :D

I have no real preference what I'm playing a character. World-saving or butt-saving, it's all good. :)

When I'm running a game, I tend to prefer epic plotlines. Save the world, or at least the kingdom. I don't stick to those, of course, but I'd have to say the majority of my games fall into that category.

Since mouseferatu was rude enough to steal my words before I had a chance to reply ;) I'll just quote the mouse and say "ditto"

:D

I think most of the time it starts off small scale when you are low level. Your party is still making a name for itself and it is mainly local threats. When you start pushing the upper levels you have know made a big enough name for yourselves that it only seems natural that when the world is comming to the end you are the one who are called. Then the plot becomes epic.

I prefer epic-scale adventures. At higher levels, it's almost mandatory.

Of course, our group has little use for the word "plot", as years of heavy-handed DMing has left it with only negative overtones (like, "All aboard the Plot Train", "I didn't die? I guess I have Plot Immunity" and "Don't bother attacking the King. He's wearing a Cloak of Plot Protection")

We prefer scenarios.

I gotta go with what emerald said, it really depends on the level as to how much the campaign setting is affected. 1st level means little to an epic level BBEG, but as you progress and eliminate his minions you become more noticeable. Not as involved as pieces on a chess board, but enough plot to catch the players' interest and not rip them apart with [plot] hooks.

There was one more option that hasn't been mentioned. What if the DM wants it to be epic, but the PCs are so inept that it just spirals down into butt-saving? Or through a comedy of misadventures the PCs get captured and sent to the very slave mines they were sent to investigate? Nosirree, I don't think anyone has made any rules for that...
