Those I argue with insist that 1 high level is superior to the same number of levels split among several lower levels.

The opposite just might be true at very low levels. Two, three, maybe four. That's about it. After that, a character will usually mop the floor with an equal number of levels spread among multiple characters, unless he's played real dumb or is severely underequipped. Try pitting a 10th level fighter against two 4th level fighters and a 2nd level fighter, or a 20th level wizard against five 4th level wizards, and see that the only question is whether the underdogs will be killed in one, two or three rounds and whether they'll be able to actually deal damage.
