What level is this spell?

Hey everyone,

First off: thanks so much for all the helpfull suggestions! I'm going to agree with the general consensus (if not unanimous) vote and call it a 5th level spell. In regards to questions, I agree perfectly, IndyPendant, its a Transmutation [fire] spell. Also, I'm thinking, Korimyr the Rat, of making it avalible to wizards/sorcerors and druids, as well as wu jen and warmages.

Feel free to call it whatever you wish. However, as it was created by my egotistical Wizard, I'm dubing it "Pallas' Sudden Flare" on J's suggestions. And I think that Anabstercorian's "Wake up, oh fire, and dance" is an awsome consideration for the Verbal component.

For those of you who just can't get enough of the Pallas fire line, here's another one we created last night:

Pallas' Searing Torch

Conjuration [fire]
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Comp: S, F
Casting: 1 Standard
Range: Touch
Damage: 2d10
Target: Creature or Object Touched
Duration: Instantanious/Concentration (See Text)
Saving: No
Spell Resistance: Yes
Cost: None

This spell generates a finger-width line of fire 2 inches long, eminating from the tip of the caster's index finger. The line of fire deals 2d10 points of fire damage to unattended objects and ignores hardness, making it useful for cutting through various materials. The flame cannot cut through objects thicker than 2 inches, nor can it ignore the hardness of adamantine or magical objects. If this spell is used to target a creature or the target changes to a creature, you must succeed at a touch attack in order to deal 2d10 points of damage, which instantly ends the spell.

We're having a bit of a debate about this spell being able to damage magical objects. What do you think, too overpowered?

Thanks again,

I wouldn't make it a Transmutation spell since that goes against some of the point of how the schools are set up. I don't believe there are any Transmutation spells that do d6/level damage, those are pretty much all Evocation, aren't they? And Disintigrate isn't really a counterexample, since that's supposed to in theory just kill you outright, though they brought it down to straight damage to make it easier to deal with. I think this is intentional, especially with regard to specialization. Or maybe my players are the only specialists who ever give up Evocation school? (in which case it wouldn't matter).

Just my 2 cents.

I think I'll stick behind Transmutation, and here's why: according to the magic section in the Player's Handbook, Evocation spells "create something out of nothing" (pg. 173, 3.5 ed), whereas Transmutation spells "change the properties of some creature, thing or condition" (pg. 174, 3.5 ed). As the property of the pre-existing flame (the condition, in this case) is changed to the property of a big, giant, cone of fire, I think Transmutation, by definition, makes the most amount of sense to me.
