Thanks for the link,

EDIT: What do you think about the MetaMagic suggestion above?

Mixed feelings. It would work, but I'd rather see it as a spell. There are only so many feats one can take.

True.

Sounds like casting a spell through a Scry... Elements of Magic has rider spells that can do just that. I'll review that book tonight and let you know what I find tomorrow, best alternative I can offer at this time.

Hopefully helpful,

As stated EoM has a use for the Scry Skill (yes a hold over from 3.0) that allows you not only to scry for people but objects and locations as well. In addition, you can combine your scry attempt with another spell (hence Rider Spell). It "cost" nothing extra it's just harder to do (increase DC for check by 5).

In standard D&D, Scry is a level 4 spell and Greater Scry is a level 7 spell... both of which can only target a person. If you want to stay away from feats I would suggest altering Scry to

1) Be able to Scry on object, locations and people.
2) When attempting to scry on something/someplace/someone use familiarity from teleport... which can cause misdirection.
3) Use Arcane Mark to mark any objects you would want to Scry on later thereby eliminating any mischance.
4) Finally, allow casting through an active Scry... any spell level under the level of the Scry used (Scry 0-3, Greater Scry 0-6).
5) Level 7 and 8 spells are too powerful and would sunder a rift in space, time if channeled through a Scry. **NOTE: This keeps Limited Wish from being cast through a Scry.

Hope this helps,
William Holder

I'd allow it as a 4th level spell, but with the regular scry rules so it's mostly useful to mask your hiding place while you strike foes who you can see normally.

Okay. Some restrictions:

- You cast a spell on the replica. It takes effect upon the actual item. The spell must be one which can target the actual item or a point in space occupied by an object (such as an emanation-type spell). Glyph of Warding works. Fireball doesn't.

- The object the spell is cast upon must be marked via Arcane Mark.

Do those help clear this up?

So what spells could actually benefit? If you can't fireball, I'm not sure it's still useful as an ambush enhancer.

Well, that wasn't its primary intended use.

There are tons of spells that can be used with this. Here are a few:

Animate Objects
Animate Rope
Antipathy
Arcane Lock
Dimensional Lock
Explosive Runes
Fire Trap
Glyph of Warding
Grease
Invisibility Sphere
Light
Mage Hand
Magic Weapon
Mending
Obscure Object
Open/Close
Polymorph Any Object
Rope Trick
Shatter
Shrink Item
Silence
Stone Shape
Sympathy
Teleport

Plenty of usefulness there, I think. It may require creativity in many cases, but I consider that a plus.
