what magic item level would you give?

Only given humans better magic items if you're okay with them being objectively superior to other races. Magic items are a part of 4e's internal math to the point where giving one guy a weapon four levels ahead of the other pcs' makes a difference, albeit one that's easily overshadowed. ... (snip)
My proposition was to increase the available level range by one or two - if they don't "trip de +1 range", the items would only be marginally better.

I agree that a level 6 weapon is much better than a level 5 one - but a level 5 one is only sometimes better than a level 4 one.
Lichemaster - another path could be to give a few (3-4) single use items. The whetstones are pretty cool and powerful, but once used, they're gone. Plus the players could share it among themselves - an opportunity to increase the party's overall power, as opposed to a character's power.
