Oh yeah! Who could forget that - though to me, that is an artifact of early 1E - where players would just grab something to fill in on the "diety" line on the character sheet, grabbed from just about anywhere. So you'd have norse god followers next to egyptian god followers next to some other greyhawk god follower... and then the gods were ignored except when it came time for a cleric...
But to me, that is more of an artifact - it is strongly reminiscent of those older games, but I don't feel like it isn't D&D without it - I much prefer a single, robust pantheon for a given campaign world. I made my own custom one back in 2E and I've used it ever since when I DM.
