Funnily enough, the Pliocene Exile series from Julian May. Alot of cool characters, good depth of motivations. No real "Bwahaha, I'm a villain!" characters but plenty of conflict and opposing desires. My favorite series for vivid characters. In fact, I think I'll read it again.:)

Not funny at all. Remove the technological trappings & the stories set in The Many Colored land are a fantastic source of fantasy inspiration.

The Tanu are the perfect amoral fae...

For me the strongest literary influences include (but are of course not limited to)...

LeGuin's Earthsea books - Ged is the prototypical Wizard for me.

Moon's Paksennarion books - Not only for the penultimate Paladin (Paks) but for the general feel of the world. Druids are even integrated in a very D&Dish way.

Leiber's Fafhrd & The Grey Mouser - 'Nuff said.

Cook's Black Company

Wagner's Kane

Dune

...and finally...

The Eddas

Let's see, what books indeed?

(a dangerous question to ask a man with 3000 volumes)

Classical mythology (and not-so-classical, including Celtic, Mayan, and Dreamtime works)

The collected works of Chretien de Troyes

Le Morte d'Arthur

The Three Musketeers

Treasure Island

The Lord of the Rings

Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser books

The Earthsea books

The Book of the Sub-Genius

Anything by Guy Gavriel Kay

The Newford stories of Charles de Lint

Seems like a good start, at least :D

A song of Fire and Ice has produced deep influence on the characters, politics, and war aspects of the game.

The Wheel of Time is the magic system I strive to capture in the games.

And the Deeds of Paks oddly mixed with the Kurntz Camber series tends to influence my spiritual stuff.

Mix that up and add in a bit of LotR and you have what I am for in a game.

In Sci-Fi - I try to remake Babylon5.....Accept no substitutes.

And for superheroes --- I run closer to the Dark Knight Returns than the JLA or the X-Men during the "Uncanny Years" rather than the Avengers.
