what other animals wold you allow a first level druid?

hi all now my guy isnt going to be first level. But i was just wondering what animals in any books would you allow a first level druid to take as a companion? If its in a book other than the MM just gimme the book and ill find it.

I would allow

any animal that had the same Hit Dice and comparable abilities. It you can have a horse why not a camel, mule or deer? If you can have a wolf why not a coyote, fox or bobcat? Eagle, Raven and hawk? Vulture or crane would be okay. No dire bears or elephants, though

one thing i dont get is why some of these animals on the 4th level and above list have the only advantage of one extra hit die over the normal ones. and since your taking away three levels of benefits thats dang near useless!
i would like to see cheetah boar panther and the other 3 hd guys be put on the normal list.

I still use the 3.0 rules. I really just like the flexibility and creativity it allows. You can have two baboons, a wolf, a swarm of crows, or any similar mix of animals. The new rules just feel more... restricting, to me.

well im playing in the world dawnforge where at each level whatever race you chose gets cirtain transformations to chose form at level 6 iv got three transformations and i chose animal companion for all three along with having a class ability as such. all of them are at the optimal 6th level druid list even though im only 6th level. i would like to pick which animal. a pack of wolves could be nice but id just like as many options as possible.

I still say go with baboons. Those things are vicious...

Then again, you could go with Chimpanzees. They look all cute... UNTIL THEY MAUL YOUR FACE OFF! Gah! Creepy little buggers! Did you know they hunt in packs? They're also cannibalistic. Gah.
