now back on topic... what other animals NOT used for bestiality... would you allow a first level druid to have as a companion. i think a swarm of flys would be rather weak as a companion but also thier vermin so that would be an interesting druid indeed...

Go to www.fierydragon.com and in the downloads section you can get Unfamiliar Familiars, a free PDF detailing (among others) bighorn, fox, mongoose, ostrich, kangaroo, raccoon, wild cat/lynx and other animals.

The wild cat/lynx and the bighorn are suitable for a 1st-level druid.

My DM is letting me have a swarm of wasps as a 1st level animal companion. Here are the stats we came up with. It's basically a swarm of spiders that can fly, and therefore some of their other abilities have been removed.

They're pretty nice, but I'm not sure they're nicer than a wolf. The - Int means they only know 1 trick ("attack"). We're ruling that they swarm around me, but don't sting me. I must occupy part of their 10' space. They're also nice because I can "put them away" underneath my robes whenever we hit the town.

Combat
A wasp swarm seeks to surround and attack any living prey it encounters. A swarm deals 1d6 points of damage to any creature whose space it occupies at the end of its move.
Distraction (Ex): Any living creature that begins its turn with a wasp swarm in its space must succeed on a DC 11 Fortitude save or be nauseated for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.
Skills: A wasp swarm has a +4 racial bonus on Sneak checks and a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. It uses its Dexterity modifier instead of its Strength modifier for Climb checks. It can always choose to take 10 on a Climb check, even if rushed or threatened.

Spider

hmm for some reason that makes me want to make a gag character who has four swarms of ferrets...

Maybe i should check out the vermin side of things. wit hmy level being six all my virmin would have at least three tricks. do they get 1 trick even with no intelligence?

Definitly let me know how that character works out for you he sounds very fun.

Waah! :(

But seriously, I always thought a "large" (as in not tiny) spider would make for a rather interesting variation. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that.

(Man, that's gonna leave a mark ;) )

aww it was just a tap on the hand.

And i wouldnt mind going the vermin route. but only problem with that is im playing a variant class with bardic music. with no intelligence they couldnt benefit from ANY of my bardic musicy goodness.

Well, allowing any sort of vermin as an animal companion is already a house rule...

The 3.0 rules do allow you to have a whole pack of things, but that just means they're easier for the BBEG to destroy all with one fireball...:)

Swarms are nice, but tend to be REALLY powerful for their HD (automatic damage, inflicting staus ailments, protection from certain forms of attack), and I, myself, wouldn't allow a swarm below the second teir of animal companions, at least.

If the mob rules were better, I'd say use those, but the mob rules in the DMGII are really not up to snuff...
