What other fantasy games are out there?

RenleyRenfield

Adventurer
I am lookin to expand out, and try a few new RPGs.

I am looking to see what everyone here would recommend for a fantasy game that has =

  • A rich and detailed setting (I don't want to write by own world or write my own races, etc)
  • no elves
  • no dwarves (I want to get far away from anything that feels close to Tolkien tropes)
  • a variety of non-human races to play (but not cartoonish or things fungus or cactus or duck people)
  • lean to the side of serious or darker (not looking for cozy or cute)
  • Rules system does not matter, any is ok.
Odd mix of stuff right? Ok, so what have you got?

Cheers!

Symbaroum kinda has elves and trolls, but only in name. They aren't anything like DND elves and trolls. If you stay away from the players guide expansion, then your mostly just humans. The other things are part of the world you interact with.

As I'm writing this, I think Wildsea might be a good one for you. IDK if I would call it fantasy, but maybe nothing is unless you have elves lol. Anyway, it's post apocalyptic stuff where nature took over. Very cool world, although I have to admit it's sitting on my shelf unplayed.

No elves, no dwarves, but do have other races is a bit tough.

Worlds without Number + Atlas of Latter Earth is a detailed, fairly serious setting without elves and dwarves having much of a role.

Shadow of the Weird Wizard is also pretty serious; it does have elves and dwarves but they are minor races and the product as a whole is very far from a Tolkien pastiche.

I have heard great things about Hyperborea. Human only, but a wide variety of Human cultures to play. Great Setting? Check. Hyperborea is insanely detailed..very serious, detailed, and gonzo (if you want it to be). I would check it out..

Yeah, I guess like someone else mentioned, as long as I can either ignore it, or its quite different (which, to a degree, i am not even sure Warhammer Fantasy gets far enough away from it... hmmm)

I really want to try and dig deep here, find some gems - or at least some stuff that is decent.

Was there ever any non-human races in L5R?

  • Shadow of the Demon Lord
  • Symbaroum
  • Talislanta (any edition, especially 5e or Savage Worlds)
  • Midnight (D&D 3.5 or 5e version)
  • Numenera (Cypher System)
  • Mörk Borg
  • Veil of the Void: Reforged

I didn't consider Numenera. It's humans only, but... they are super strange. So that may be ok.

Symbaroum.. it really only has two non-human races in its main book ,plus what is clearly a Elf )half elf) of the style i am avoiding. Does that game have any extended race books?

Veil of the Void sounds neat, but I am not lookin for Sci-Fi at this time.. trying to stick closer to sword and magic ....

Yes, there are non-human racese in L5R.
The ratfolk. (The proper name escapes me.)
The Naga.

Both have different enough mechanics and abilities to feel very different from the humans of the setting. At least in 3rd edition.

The game is up to 5th edition now and being published by Fantasy Flight. I've only glanced at snippets available on the internet, but it looks like it's using the narrative dice thing FFG likes. (Success/Failure; Advantage/Threat.)
