The problem with not releasing the mage one is far too many rules they've already put in these playtests are hard to judge without seeing the spells being mentioned. Can I know if always-prepared barrage of arrows is good or bad without seeing the barrage of arrows spell?

Yeah, I think they should get magic/spellcasting out of the way real soon into the playtest. Its the biggest chunk of the phb and so many things reference it, it should have been a priority.

I assume that each playtest packet uses standard 5E rules for anything not specified in the packet. So conjure barrage uses the 5E version. (Guidance, on the other hand, has been reworked, and much improved IMO.)

I'm sure the spells will get overhauled in due course, but it makes sense to get a bead on the classes first. When a spell is "locked in" to a class ability, such as conjure barrage, I'd hope they would keep the class feedback in mind when revising the spell.
