What qualities make a gamer awesome?

I was reading TB's thread extolling the virtues of a book, and one bit leaped out at me:

Basically, the Chief God has a really epic, poetic drama-filled adventure in mind, and it keeps getting sidetracked by the fact that his players (the rest of the pantheon) are for the most part petty, rules-lawyering yahoos, bored goofs who can't retain any information from moment to moment, snide know-it-alls with a sense of entitlement...and the lone awesome gamer for whom you get the feeling the adventure was designed.

We all know the negative things that bad gamers do, but what positive qualities make a gamer awesome?

Have Shil for a first name and Sen for a surname. It also makes him remarkably modest.

But if you can't have that, a few things which come to mind:

Creativity

Playing well with others

Proactivity

A sense of proportion

Good communication skills

A good sense of humor

There are a whole lot of other things that can help, of course. I should also note that what may make a gamer awesome in one group could make him terrible in another.

Generosity (letting your fellow players shine, helping them do so)

Ability to take joy in others' happiness (especially helpful for DMs!)

Stop shilling!

Also, my name is Mallus and I approve of shil's message. I would, though, like to expand on 'playing well with others'. A really great gamer has to be able to enjoy what the other players are doing with their characters. Most of the time spent gaming it's someone else's turn.

The most important qualities I look for in a player are:

Non argumentative (you know when to hold your tongue and stop pressing an issue)
tolerant towards different types of players
easy going
creative without abusing the rules
knows when to be serious and when to be goofy
and making an attempt to roleplay is nice. You don't have to be good, but making an effort to be good is very appreciated.

I'm sure what makes a player awesome depends on what kind of group you enjoy being in.

I think what makes a gamer awesome is a player who realizes that the DM puts a lot of work into making sure everyone has fun and so they take the time to listen to the DM when he is describing something. He is also someone who takes the time to say to his DM great game thanks.

He realizes that other people are also in the game amd deserve their time in the spotlight and lets then have it and he also tries to make sure everyone else is having a good time.

He comes to game prepared to play and does not expect everyone to sit and wait while he levels his character when he has a week to do so.

He does not make characters who he knows won't fit into the party and will cause issues.

Lots of good thoughts already here.

I might add: communicates with the DM. Tells the DM what's working well, and, even more importantly, when there are things that *aren't* working well (but does so in a constructive way).

I'd also add: always chips in for pizza, and brings snacks to share with everyone. :D
