Damn, I should have voted other and pimped FATE (Fantastic Adventures in Table-top Entertainment - http://www.faterpg.com/). They even have an SRD over there!

Anywho - I voted for Mecha d20 since its among Pulver's best works, right up there with GRUPS Ultra-Tech and GURPS Vehicles. Mecha isn't a stand-alone ruleset by any stretch though. That's what I get for voting from the front page.

He's lost me on this one, Iron Heroes, Arcana Unearthed/Evolved, Mutants and Masterminds, etc. There are a number of OGC rulesets.

Some of those could arguably not be considered standalone, though. I wasn't aware that the above games had been released in entirety (or near entirety) as OGC. That is, I know they're OGL games - but that isn't the same thing as being a standalone OGC rule set (if it were, any game rleased under the OGL would qualify).

I guess the criteria that I meant to imply was games that whose entire text (or nearly entire text) was deemed OGC - is this the case with Iron Heroes and Arcana Unearthed/Evolved? I'm fairly certain you're right about M&M fitting this critera (at least 1e, I haven't seen 2e yet), and I think OGL Conan (the pocket handbook) also fits said criteria.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted, but I can't edit the poll. This poll has really just been plain sloppy from the word 'go' - after it closes, I'll post a redux with proper criteria listed up front and choices such as M&M and OGL Conan (the pocket player's guide) on the list.

Iron Heroes and AU/E aren't really standalone though, since they assume you have a DMG and MM around as well.

Just make sure when you do that you remember to post a link for all of us to follow :)

Most of the OGL stuff I use is like AU/AE, not a complete ruleset in and of itself. I'd have to say my favorite so far is d20 Modern, though. 3.0/3.5 was great, but Modern just has so many innovations that I want to use it even in my fantasy games now.

You do mean to link the two polls, right? If so, will do.

Spycraft 2 is getting all of my love at the moment (although d20 Modern is my second favorite).

Easily Modern. Don't get me wrong, I love DnD with a passion and it has a special place in my heart, but the Modern content allows for easy modification for use in just about any game and that includes fantasy. Look at it this way: We have Grim Tales which breaks down DND class features into talents, the Second World Sourcebook which expands on Urban Arcana's idea of the Shadow World and links our world to almost any fantasy game and there is Malladins Gate Dark Lore rules which integrates the best of modern with the best of DnD.

The modern content allows for a lot of freedom and leeway in the creation of material for any genre. If it weren't for people with unique vision (I'm looking at you Wulf Ratbane) and the talent to execute, the future of roleplaying would be Grim indeed.

Actually, all of the ones in the post you responded to were standalone. And you still left off plenty of others; True20, Conan, etc.

I personally lean towards prefering Conan or Grim Tales.
