What should I play??

Legend
I have the rare opportunity to actually play rather than DM, so now I am faced with the quandry of wha exactly I should play. The party contains A rogue, a Ranger, Wizard, Cleric, Fighter-archer oriented. So I can pretty much play whatever. I am thinking of actually playing a monk or druid but am truly undecided. The ony criteria is the character must be useful.

Stat are done by 4d6 re-reroll.

Depends on the books you are using really. I'm partial to psions myself. Specificly, Savants

Savants don't look like much, but they can take a beating. It is a common occurence that my Savant will have more hit points than the party barbarian.

Just make sure you pick up Malhavoc Press' If Thoughts Could Kill and Mindscapes. They are PDFs and you can get them both for about $12 or so.

Yes Tallarn is exactly right ,that is what I thought when I first read this thread. Barbarian would be very fun,and with the 4d6 roll you can end up with a VERY respectable one. Also masters of the wild has some very sweet feats like extra rage...etc...etc...,and just think you could use the spiked chain,or a mercurial greatsword. Mwuaahahaha

Since it's a large party and already has the basic roles covered, I'd suggest taking one of the more flexible classes, which can fill a number of roles. Druid, bard or paladin, for example. I'd suggest druid. Powerful spellcasting, wildshape, animal companion - how could you not be useful?

Or just break the mold and play a half-orc bard :D

Don't knock the half-orc bard. Bard song abilities are based on Perform *ranks*, not perform rolls. As long as you can get your Cha up to 12 (high enough to cast 2nd level spells) you'll do okay as a half-orc bard.

But to answer the thread's question, I join with others in recommending a melee powerhouse. Since you've got an archer, rogue, and ranger, I'd avoid a slow heavy-armor tank and instead go with something that can work with your stealthy companions--something like a Duelist, or a Ftr/monk with combat reflexes and a longspear (use unarmed attacks when foes bypass your Reach).

Or a barbarian weaponmaster with a keen greataxe and improved critical. Hulk smash!

Unless it's a melee cleric, there aren't any tanks. The ranger and the fighter-archer probably won't be wearing shields and plate.

So, you could be the tank. Barb would be ok, but you wouldn't have heavy armor... I dunno. Paladin maybe. Or psychic warrior maybe, they can at least get a high ac. (If they get heavy armor to start with? They do I think.)

Oh well. Even without a formal tank, you should be able to play virtually anything and have fun with it. If you care about having a special role in the party, go bard-faceman buffer or barb/paladin/psywar-tank. If you don't mind not having a large schtick, hey, play whatever. If you go monk though, the party might run low on buffs for you, as there would be four non-casters and two casters, while the druid wouldn't necessarily need many buffs.
