It's Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, or 5E. The edition number probably won't appear on the cover, but that's what we'll all call it, and that's how it will be sorted in forums and shopping carts.

It's strange, of course, because there have been more than five editions of D&D, but the the modern numbering system clearly starts with AD&D and will continue in that manner.

Windows 1.0, Windows 2.0, Windows 3.0, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.

A major brand is capable of changing the numbering system mid-stream if they want to do it. And it's possible to get people to buy into that renumbering system.
Windows 1.0 is what we call it now. At the time it was just "Windows". And each new iteration has a different name, they haven't decided to just call 8 "Windows" again. Because that would lead to confusion.

This time around, five shall be the number; and the number shall be five. No more, and no less. Not four. Not six. Seven is definitely out....

I wonder if we'd have such a split vote if we dropped the A from the first option:

"5th Edition of D&D"

I know that's the only reason I voted for it and for Shirley.

It'll be called 5E same as the previous iPad was called the iPad3. It will not be referred to as 5th Edition of AD&D, cos the AD7D brand died at 2. So we have had 3rd E and 4th E and now we will have 5th E of D&D. I reckon WotC will just call it D&D, dropping the edition. But to differentiate it on the net and in conversation it will be called 5E.

So modify your poll cos the answer isn't on there! :D

Maybe we should just call it D&D5 then. It's not technically an edition but it is the fifth version of AD&D.

Yeah 5E D&D is not technically correct but it makes it obvious what we are talking about. I mean if you count Holmes Basic, B/X and BECMI as separate editions, which is reasonable when thinking about the dif between 1E and 2E, D&D Next could be the 10th Edition/version of D&D!
