What sort of aerial support would this evil horde have?

sorry, it's 3.5. The campaign has been ongoing for over 18 months now, so it predates 4E. When this campaign is done, we'll decide on staying with 3.5, or going to Pathfinder or 4E. That will likely be late summer/early fall.

As a player, I prefer the iconic and mythical over the weird and new. If you say to me, "there are marrashi flying overhead," I'll ask, "what the heck is a marrashi?" And then you'll explain it, but by then the moment is gone.

But if you say there are manticore, wyverns, giant vultures, or strange, flitting black shadows, that I can see. That I like.

But he would not say there are marrashi flying overhead. He'd say: "The skies darken as a mishappen horde of demonic gnolls take flight on eagles' wings. The stench of rotting, diseased flesh overpowers all senses. The rampant howling of the horde seems to pause, and from the unearthly stillness a deranged chant to the demon lord Yenoghu rises placing the gnolls in a religious trance of rage and brutality. The marrashi, flying demonic avatars, harbringers of rot and pestilence, grasp their bows with their bird-like talons and let loose a flight of black feathered arrows. It has began."

good description. I would not even say "demonic" gnolls until the players got up close to them... just creatures that look like gnolls, only with wings.

Well, don't count me out for love of the Yrthak.

And I LOVE the idea of the mutant bat.

BUT they're size Huge and they are CR 9.

I think that might be a bit powerful for what the OP asked for. If not, though, I think that it'd be an excellent choice.

And bats using their sonar to create focuses sonic explosions? Brilliant!

An evil horde of this size might have a few yrthak with them, but I was looking more for a multitude of flying monkeys sort of thing. I might go with the Marrash, shadows and some dire vultures as well. The marrash & vultures both have the "Scent" feat so would be logical choices as scouts/skirmishers as well. Possibly a vrock as well.

I'm liking the Vrock + vultures idea!
