What spells are thwarted by Protection from Evil

I know that you can't give dominate orders to someone under the influence of protection from evil. What about suggestion? What about charm person?

If someone is currently under the influence of a suggestion, and protection from evil is cast on them, does it affect the suggestion?

All mind-affecting effects cast by evil creatures are suppressed (not dispelled) for the duration of the spell. That includes suggestion and charm person. You could still cast them, and if the spell duration outlasts the protection, it kicks in after the protection wears off.

Hong, are you sure the phrase "exercise mental control" is synonymous with "mind-affecting"? I'm not so sure that it is, but I'd love so see some clarification of that point.

At any rate, the second part of my question (which came up in last week's game) is, what happens when someone currently under the effects of a suggestion spell has protection from evil cast on them? Can they think clearly for the PfE's duration, or are they still affected by the suggestion?

Well, given that Charm, and Domination don't work when the subject is under the effects of PfE, then I'd say they think clearly.

Ah, that'll teach me to followup without checking the sources. IMO the spell's description is vague; there are many possible interpretations of "exercise mental control". As a rule of thumb, and to make things clearer, you might declare prot. evil to work only against Compulsion effects. This would include domination and suggestion (and fear), but not charming.

The suggestion is suppressed, so whatever underlying state of mind the character has would apply. That would mean they think clearly, unless they were already in a state that they couldn't think in the first place. Like if they were drunk, for instance.

I could be inventing this (or remembering it from non-official sources), but I definitely recall Protection From Evil protecting against a vampire's gaze attack (which is Charm Person).

The spell does not protect from charms. What it does is make the protected person immune to telepathic control. A vampire cannot excercise it's telepathic control, but can give verbal orders.
