What the best way to enlarge a magic weapon?

dagger

Adventurer
A player has a magic longsword he wants to have enlarged. The sword is a gift for a hill giant chief they are trying to negotiate with.

I know about the Sizing ability but I was looking for something else, since it is a one time size change for the weapon.

Thanks!

By default - you need sizing.

The only way I could think of this occuring is some mega serious rule bending...

"dispel magic" to supress the magic weapon's qualities, followed by "polymorph any object"... if you contend that the dispelling renders the sword no longer "magical" momentarily. Problem is, that has serious consequences for other magic items... like defending weapons.

In my game I ruled that all magic weapons and armor resize. It's part of the inherent magic of enchanting a weapon. It takes one minute for a weapon to change size to suit the weilder.

I'd never noticed before the 'poly any object doesn't affect magic items' clause to the spell - it is a change from 3.0e where it said

3.0 edition said:
"A nonmagical object cannot be made magical by this spell. A magic item or weapon or other object can be polymorphed into another type of magic object, but it never gains abilities superior to those of the original object"

but now it says

3.5 edition said:
A nonmagical object cannot be made into a magic item with this spell. Magic items aren’t affected by this spell.

Seems a bit silly to me that polymorph any object can turn a pebble into a fully functioning human being, but can't resize a sword.

Mind you, for a level lower there is Limited Wish, and changing the size of a sword should be well within its powers.

Cheers

RAW, it's tough without limited wish or better.

Personally, I find it very likely that somebody has created a spell to do this. Something like:

Tailor Magic Arms or Armor
Transmutation
Level: Cleric 3, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V,S,M
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range: Touch
Target: Unattended magic weapon or magic suit of armor touched
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)

This spell changes the size of a single unattended magic weapon or magic suit of armor. It changes the size of the object one category, up or down, as the caster desires. It does not change any other properties of the object.

The spell requires a certain amount of costly oils and magical ingredients. The base cost for material components is one-tenth the base enchantment cost of the object. E.g., a +2 keen flaming dagger has a base cost to enchant of 32,000 gp, so this spell would consume a base of 3,200 gp in magical ingredients.

If the object is formed of costly materials, and the caster is increasing the size, the caster must also pay the difference in the cost of special materials. Conversely, if the caster is shrinking the object, he may apply the difference against the base material cost.

Arcane Material Component: See text

Nope.

I got an email for enlarging magic weapons today... I'll forward it to ya.

In any case, auto-resizing magic weapons are fine if they're made out of mundane materials; a weapon of (say) adamantine shouldn't resize because there's a cost involved with the process. Or invent a smith that can reforge a weapon without losing its enchantment. Poly any object is a fun solution as well.
