Only in roughly the same sense that as a human, you're a kind of fish - the brittle stars (which include modern starfish) and the basket stars diverged some 500 million years ago.

Hey, if more people could simply ID it as "some kind of starfish", that would be a step in the right direction.

I mean, think about the context: there are "educated" adults who don't get the differences between sharks and whales. And you KNOW someone out there freaked out about that 50' crab hoax.
