Shrink Item
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One touched object of up to 2 cu. ft./level
Duration: One day/level; see text
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)
You are able to shrink one nonmagical item (if it is within the size limit) to 1/16 of its normal size in each dimension (to
about 1/4,000 the original volume and mass). This change effectively reduces the object’s size by four categories. Optionally,

you can also change its now shrunken composition to a clothlike one.

Objects changed by a shrink item spell can be returned
to normal composition and size merely by tossing them onto any solid surface or by a word of command from the original
caster. Even a burning fire and its fuel can be shrunk by this spell. etc.

What is a "clothlike" composition? If I were to shrink a rock, and select the "clothlike" composition option, would I then have a small fabric pebble, which resembed the rock, but which now is made of cloth?

Ditto a bucket of water, I now have a small cloth icon of a bucket of water?

Very odd wording, to say the least.

You're right, that is odd wording. I hadn't noticed it before since I don't runmages (and if I dmd I use a different magic system) but maybe you're right and it turns into a little cloth icon. Wierd....

That's how I always interpreted it. I don't see what's really that weird about it, though. I'm pretty sure the Item spell in 2e worked like this as well. I could be wrong, though, it's been a while. I assume by composition (rather than saying the object actually turns to cloth) indicates that it is not affected by things cloth is affected by; therefore it won't burn if it was a rock, etc.
