What the hell does [W] mean in hit?

I'm new to 4th ed rules and playing d&d in general.

I have the books but cannot find the answer to this.

Under certain powers, next to the Hit description it will sometimes have:

Hit: 1[W] + strength modifier

or

Hit: 3[W] + yadda yadda yadda

what the hell does [W] mean or represent and what page is that covered in the manual?

See p219 of the PHB. [W] is the base damage of the weapon you're using.
