What to call adventurers?

If the PC's walk into a town that was just harrased/robbed by a few NPC's with class levels, a villager might say "We was just looted by a few ________"

Heroes wouldn't work, adventurers wouldn't really either.

Since I was 10, I have always had NPCs react with caution when someone presents themselves as "adventurer". In my mind, adventurer is another word for thief, opportunist and/or killer. Not something a bunch of good guys would call themselves .

Hoodlums? Brigands? Sons-of-bitches? There are many words you could use to fill the blank

Heroes only describe good guys or people that do good/brave things

hoodlums, brigands, etc only describes bad guys.

adventurers describes all character types, I need a cool sounding word that does the same

Trouble. Everybody who's better than the rest of the poor NPCs without really good player character classes is just that. Trouble.

However, I doubt that people are going to use metagame knowledge to call others with PC classes by a specific name. That's more appropriate if you're playing some kind of Order of the Stick-game, where the fourth wall is broken constantly, and the people use metagame-knowledge all the time.

I have always had a problem with the term "adventurers". Anyone who calls themselves an adventurer seems like they belong in a peter pan story.

In an interview on the Touching the Void DVD that's what Simon Yates, a mountain climber, calls himself. The quote is something like, "I regard myself as an adventurer."

A term that will by used in the campaign world? I can't think of anything that people would use that would encompass anything from a bookish wizard to a berzerker fighter.
